no logo or bios screen on internal or external monitor

I have a Lenovo w500 laptop. When I power on my computer on AC power, I do not see anything on the internal screen or the external screen. I hear the fan or something running in the computer. There are 3 indicator lights on at the bottom of the screen. 1. the AC plug is green 2. the battery symbol is flashing yellow. 3. the light next to that is green(looks like circle with Z slightly slanted inside)

I figure the battery is dead but it still should work when on AC power. I never see the Lenovo logo or BIOS screen or anything on the screens.

Any ideas?

Possible corrupted BIOS setting(s) preventing normal operation and startup perhaps.

Try a power refresh by disconnecting the charger, removing the main battery then opening the laptop and disconnecting the backup battery (aka cmos or RTC battery) from the motherboard and then press and hold the Power button operated for 15-20 seconds.

Reconnect and reassemble everything, connect the charger and check.

Here's the hardware maintenance manual for the laptop.

Go to p.79 (87 of 216 pdf) to view the procedure to remove the battery.

If the battery is >4-5 years old, replace it.

I installed a new CMOS battery, did the power button cycle, cleaned out the fan, removed the memory, harddrive, DVD, reinstalled everything, put the battery back in, plugged in the power. When I powered up the computer it booted. Thank you.

After I installed the operating system the computer worked fine. I noticed it was always using the integrated Intel graphics. I went into the bios and turned off the switchable graphics and changed it to discrete. I saved and exited the bios. Now I am back to where I started where the computer does not boot and I do not see anything on the screen or on the screen connected to the dock the computer is in.

Try the power refresh again and check.

This should reset the BIOS back to factory default settings.

Might be safer to make the discrete GPU as the primary in Windows > Settings > Graphics rather than in BIOS.

That way, on startup BIOS will always use the integrated Intel one and when Windows loads it will make the discrete one the one that is used.

I did the power refresh and then I updated the BIOS to the latest from Lenovo. I got into the bios and switched to discrete graphics again. When I saved and exited I am back where I started with nothing showing up. Could it be that there is something wrong with the discrete graphics device? I would try switching to discrete in the OS but I am running Linux and the last time I looked into it the graphics switching does not work very well or at all in Linux. When I can get into Linux after power refresing, it looks like Linux does not even know at that point that there is discrete graphics. That is why I am trying to do it in the BIOS. There are 3 settings in the BIOS for graphics card. 1. to say which one to use as default 2. to say whether to allow switchable 3. something about the boot screen.

I also want to hook up external monitors to the laptop again and the integrated and discrete cards are only connected to certain outputs. I'm not sure if I can even have an external monitor with the integrated.

Don't know Linux that well but check if there's a graphics driver package suitable for the discrete GPU that's applicable to the Linux OS you're using.

Does it work OK if you run a "live" Linux OS from a USB drive i.e. don't install it, just run it?
