Can I update the BIOS for my laptop? Or do I need to accept it's old?

hp pavilion x360 convertible14-ba1xx

This might get long, TIA for reading!

I've used the full device name my system provides, but I can't find much information on the issue my laptop is having, possibly because it's around 6 years old and discontinued by HP.

My laptop has developed an unfortunate habit of powering off with no notice, often while I'm trying to do work for university. I recently replaced the battery with a compatible (to the best of my knowledge) off-brand one from Ebay. This fixed its issue of telling me the battery might be too old every time I started it up, but began the random powering-off issue. I usually have to plug it in for it to restart.

When I restart the laptop (and on the first occasion I started it up after adding the new battery), it displays the following message:

"The CMOS checksum is invalid. The CMOS will be reset to the default configuration and will be rebooted. Please check your BIOS Setup options to see if they change.

CMOS Reset (502)

ENTER- Reboot the system

For more information, please visit: www.hp.com/go/techcenter/startup"

The laptop then restarts as usual, with my browser tabs able to be restored, programs auto-saved etc., so it's not a massive worry. I've also noticed the date and time are sometimes wrong afterwards, so I go and toggle those settings until it resets.

Having visited the webpage, I gathered that this code indicated I should update the BIOS, but I can't find any software for this laptop or a similar one that will work with Windows 11.

I'd like to keep this laptop working as long as possible, but I know she won't last forever. Do I just need to accept this as one of her quirks? I'm also thinking about a system reset, but I don't have a backup drive at the moment (broke student lol), and if I can possibly avoid having to reinstall all the software I'm using to study (various CAD programs, full Adobe suite, Clip Studio paint, video editing stuff etc.) that would be great. Any other advice on places to look is appreciated!

Hi @pollyf

If the problem started after replacing the battery, try uninstalling the Microsoft ACPI compliant control method battery drivers in Device Manager > Battery, then close all open windows and restart the laptop in the normal manner.

Upon restarting, Windows will reinstall the drivers. Check if the problem is still there.

Here's a link to the drivers for a HP Pavilion x360 14-ba100nj model, that may help. The latest BIOS version was released in 2022

It may be prudent to back up your data before updating the BIOS as sometimes BIOS updates can lead to problems in the PC. Not always but chances are if you don't have a backup it will, whereas if you do, it won't.

Thank you so much, I've given that first part a go and, so far so good! I'll try updating the BIOS when I next visit my dad and can borrow a backup drive.
