Sorry but you cannot upgrade just the processor since it is soldered to the logic board. What you can do is to change the logic board to a faster one. I.ex. you have a A1278 late 2011 and all the logic boards share the same connectors and will fit.

Apple has named the unibody pro 13" for model A1278 through several upgrades. This means technically all boards from this model will fit. But they often change the speaker assembly or cable position for the iSight or bluetooth connector so you would have to mess with those parts too if you i.ex. try to install a 2009 logic board in a 2011 A1278.

If you got hold of a 2.8Ghz i7 logic board in the same production cycle (late 2011) it would fit. I did that several times. I got a 2010 2.4ghz i5 MBP A1286 and bought a used 2.66ghz i7 board that is running fine, everything fits fine.

I don't think you have many options as you see the screen is different and the communcations board is very different on 2010 and 2011. You would have to replace the BT,wifi and camera cable. From 2011 the cables are more likely to fit between models.

So are you saying the logic board can't support a more powerful CPU, or that we can't solder??? Inquiring minds wanna know.

This is from one of my friends at Apple.

"Is it possible to upgrade the processor? Probably. It'll be difficult though. Laptops are especially tricky. You may need a new logic board. Apple doesn't allow processor upgrades under warranty, so if you try and fail, Apple will do absolutely nothing to help."

From the schematics I've seen, the processor seems to be set into the motherboard and not made to be easily removed. So there is a danger in replacing it as you might damage the logic board on its removal.

So, final answer? It can be done.

Just not easily.

And it could prove to be a very expensive mistake if it isn't done right.

It is way easier and cheaper to just buy a second logic board with the proc already in place. Selling the first one can mean you you don't have to pay that much. It'll probably be cheaper then the Apple CPU upgrade.

To be clear, It is not possible to upgrade the CPU since it is soldered to the logic board. Even if you had the skills to solder a CPU you would have to to do changes to the logic board. The only reasonable way is to buy a new logic board. You can get those on Ebay, Alibaba, Aliexpress. Changing a logic board on this machine is fairly easy following the guides here. An upgrade from an i5 to an i7 processor can give a boost but you have to compare that to the cost and that means getting some back for your current working logic board. i7 2.8Ghz logic boards run around $350-$400.

it's possible if you have a 2012 or previous body. Currently some sites like OWC sell processor chips pulled from other computers that can be bought for a third of the original price. Yes you will need advanced skill because you need to heat the surface to remove the chip and dermal paste wothouth damaging the logic board. My recommendation would be to buy one of those and get a technitian to install it.
