iPhone 15 pro Max randomly reboots

Hello,

I have an iPhone 15 Pro Max which has been working perfectly fine for me, till recently. A few months ago I noticed the phone randomly rebooting while I was using Safari. This happened maybe 3 times in a row and then everything was fine again. I didn't think much of it and continued using it like normal.

A few weeks ago the same happened while I was using Apple Music. After a few random reboots I decided to perform an update, which turned out to be a bad idea; during the update the phone crashed again and it had to be restored via my Macbook. After the restore the phone worked fine, but I still decided to contact Apple Support, who ran some diagnostics remotely, which didn't find anything wrong with the phone.

One hour later the phone started crashing and rebooting again, but this time it became progressively worse, to the point that the phone wouldn't boot past the Apple logo, and if it did, it turned off immediately. At this point I decided to turn it in to my local Apple reseller. However, they could not take the phone because they couldn't read the serial number since the phone was completely unresponsive in the store. Back at home the phone miraculously started to boot (and crash) again. After many tries and crashes, I was able to restore it again.

Today the phone still randomly reboots sometimes. I cannot find any consistent reason for when this happens. Does anyone have a clue what could be causing this? Is it hardware or software related? I found some crash report in the settings app, but I have no idea how to read these.

Hi Mick,

The place to start is what's called a panic log, which is a record of the circumstances under which the phone performs an operation called a kernel panic. It does this when it encounters an unrecoverable error and reboots to phone in an attempt to reset everything. Fortunately we have an excellent reference for those issues right here.

After you've read the wiki article, the next thing to do is to go in and locate the latest panic log. Copy and paste or screenshot the first page of it, then come on back and add that information to your question. At that point we may well have enough information to point you in the right direction toward fixing the issue once and for all.

On your phone Apple has changed the error codes, but we've got that covered as well with another article that has all of the information we've discovered so far about them.

Your panic log has the information needed to diagnose the issue; in this case we're interested in the line containing this text:

ANS2 Recoverable Panic

That line there tells us your phone is having an issue with what's called the NAND storage, which is the phone's version of a hard drive. Alisha (@flannelist) explains it better than I can, and here's what they had to say.

ANS2 (Apple NAND Storage version 2) is Apple’s controller for, you guessed it, storage. NAND is a type of flash memory commonly used in modern smartphones and computers with soldered on storage.

  • If you get this panic, chances are the chip which houses all the data on your phone is malfunctioning or communication lines to the NAND are not functioning properly.
  • Replacing the NAND requires microsoldering skills and the use of a programmer to write unique data from the old NAND chip to the new one.

Either your flash memory chip or the signal lines going between the memory controller and the NAND chip are defective or damaged. Unfortunately, fixing this sort of issue requires advanced board level repair skills and equipment and is not something you or I can do in our office or garage. Your average screen/battery repair shop probably can't handle this sort of fix either; you'd have to find someone who specializes in microsoldering and board level repairs.

Sorry I don't have better news for you; to be honest if it was my phone I'd probably be looking for a new phone. Due to Apple's aggressive policy of parts pairing, it's no longer feasible to replace the motherboard since you would also have to replace the majority of the internal components along with it.

Thanks for the reply. I have been on vacation the last week, during which the phone has rebooted every now and then, but mostly work fine. I didn't really take time to look into it further. However today the phone went completely unresponsive again. Currently I can't even put it in recovery mode, it only shows a black screen. I did manage to safe some crash logs a few days ago. These are some of the first lines:

I think it has a bad NAND IC which means, a faulty internal storage drive causing to corrupt , freezes the systems and the main function of auto reboots is when a system detects a malfunction or irregular data patterns, it will decide to force restarts it self. If it still occurs a random restarts then it maybe possible that it is a hardware problem thats needed to be physically check by an apple authorized service centers.

Thanks for the reply. In the meantime I went to the Apple reseller, which redirected me to the original seller. Luckily this issue was still under warranty and the whole board and battery have been replaced. It was never confirmed to me what the exact issue was.

Same has happened. Brought into genius Apple Store for diagnosis.. $600+ to fix as its internal system wear & tear..basically phone is going into panic mode because of the software. Not your fault. Hopefully you have insurance or still on warranty other than that a new phone it is if you’re not willing to pay for the repair. Make sure to backup everything if you can.. phone will probably give up on you soon! Unfortunately for me I factory reset and lost everything. Still didn’t do the trick. Although it didn’t crash as much as it did before every few minutes but I am over it and currently waiting for a new phone! Goodluck!
