Craftsman 30" riding mower RER1000 slipping out of gear to lower gear

Hello All,

My Craftsman 30" riding mower RER1000 slipping out of gear to lower gear.

The park brake also does not always hold stopped. Sometimes it does and sometimes the mower moves forward slow, like Park is now 1st gear.

I took off the deck. I then took off the transmission between the rear wheels. I opened the transmission up and didn't see anything out of the ordinary inside.

Would this be due to a worn break assembly on the transmission.

I can't figure out what is causing this issue.

Thank you.

Thank you.

I did a lot more than I needed to take apart but now I know and the trans got new grease.

The metal rod off the transmission wore a grove in the back side of the drive belt.

Is that normal?

I wouldn't think that it should touch the belt at all.

I'm not sure if the arrow is the proper spot that is rubbing the belt. It could be the other end.

It looks like you're pointing out a beltkeeper. If this is the original belt on the machine, and it's still working fine, I wouldn't be too concerned about it unless the belt looks like it might be at the end of it's life. You should see a polished spot on the keeper (not apparent in your picture) or whatever else the belt might be hitting/rubbing against. You could always replace the belt, if you were so inclined, and it would last another twelve years!

This is likely to be an adjustment to the shift mechanism. If you follow the shift lever back to the rear end, you will find it is attached by a hairpin clip or cotter pin to a ferrule that, when unclipped, can be turned in or out. I would try adjusting that ferrule one turn at a time and see if the condition improves or worsens. Obviously, if it worsens, begin turning it the opposite way. Here's a view of this part of the mower. The ferrule is part # 15 in the picture.
