Try a different USB port. I get the USB device not recognized message sometimes if I plug into my USB hub or if I use an extension cable.

What have you about it this far? New cable? Different USB port on your computer? Cleaned the dock connector?

when i plug in my iphone to the USB port it tells me device not recognized
