When I start and log in the screen goes black and won't start anything

Random make it difficult but if it stays on long enough when Windows is loaded check in Event Viewer for any Critical, Error or Warning events that may have been logged at the same time the problem started before. Look for events that have the most appearances in the list and then search online using the Event ID and Source information to find out what it means.

Here are some troubleshooting checks that may help determine if it is an OS problem or a perhaps a hardware problem.

• Is the laptop fan still operating when the problem occurs?
• Start the laptop and get into BIOS with a working display and check if the laptop stays on for a while and doesn't freeze etc.
• Download and run this free memory test program from a USB drive inserted into the laptop, (don't forget to change the boot order to USB 1st boot option) You're not so much testing if the memory is OK (although if it passes then that's a bonus) but you're also testing a lot of the hardware functions that are needed to run the program itself. The program is a standalone program so it doesn't require Windows to be loaded to run it. If it works OK without freezing etc then it's looking like a Windows OS problem if not then it's probably hardware.

Please confirm the full model number of the laptop as shown on the product information label on the bottom of the laptop.
