How to replace thermal paste on CPU? (temps are way too high)

i recently got my dell xps 15 9520 motherboard replaced after i accidentally fried it. and i just recently noticed that almost no matter what im doing, the cpu temps are skyrocketing, and are almost always thermal throttling. Im using Coretemp, and its specificaly on a few cores but still on every core, it gets really hot. im not sure how exactly how to repaste it and which medium i should use (liquid metal, paste, PTM750). if someone could help that would be great. Thanks :>

Hi @thirti3

If the motherboard was just replaced, presumably the repairer would've ensured that the laptop's original heat sink's thermal paste residue would have been cleaned off and a fresh coating applied to the CPU on the new motherboard during installation.

If when you have removed the heat sink and there's no new thermal paste on the CPU you should contact them about it. Really not good, on their part if it isn't.

Here's the service manual for the laptop.

Go to p.31 to view the procedure to remove the heat sink from the motherboard. This will allow you to refresh (or apply if none there) the thermal paste to the CPU. Here's the ifixit Wie trage ich Wärmeleitpaste am besten auf guide that will help.

As to whether to use liquid metal or thermal paste, everyone has their own ideas on that.

There's lots of information online that perhaps you should review first, which is better to use and when but generally it seems that you have to be a lot more careful when applying liquid metal than thermal paste.

Thank you, ive read some reddit forums and im definitely going to be using thermal paste as i have little to no experience doing this stuff. Ill try this later today and i hope it works. im going to be really mad if Dell just forgot to apply thermal paste or liquid metal. and i WILL write them about it if they did. thank you again

I just reaplied the thermal paste. dell PUT WAYYYYYY TOO MUCH, like probobly half of a tube worth, it was a pain to clean up. i fixed it and put some stuff i found lying around. the cpu still thermal throttles but it looks like the cpu power packet is about 50-80 compared to 50 tops of what it used to be

and its harder for it to throttle.

the only issue i have now is that the fans take WAY too long to ramp up. like 4 or 5 second delay

@thirti3

Check if the fan is dust free and also the exhaust vent

I did, there was barely any any I removed what little there was. Shouldn’t have had any affect.

Have you selected High Performance in Control Panel > Power Options > Choose or customize a power plan?
