Why won’t my MacBook Pro boot an ox or internet recovery mode?

I got this free MacBook Pro 2011 15 inch with a bad battery and no SSD. So I removed the battery and put in a bootable El Capitan drive. But the Mac won’t boot and shows a circle with a line thru it. When I boot recovery mode, it starts, shows a loading bar and globe, loads, goes black, then boots to a white screen and never leaves the white screen. Does anybody know why this would happen and how to fix it?

You're stuck in no man's land! The internal SSD you put in has too old an OS on it. This system's OS was upgraded to High Sierra or newer which changed the expected boot blocks that support APFS over the older HPFS+ El Capitan uses.

Do you have access to a second Mac system to setup a bootable USB thumb drive with a newer OS like High Sierra (10.13), which is the highest this system supports from Apple. Then booting up under it you should be able to setup the partition and format the internal (if there is anything important on the drive you'll want to back it up first).

@johannwinter - Just download the installer fle from here How to download and install macOS, then copy it to a 32GB thumb drive which you’ve formatted for MacOS. Last step is to convert the installer into a bootable version following this guide Create a bootable installer for macOS

Now just plug in the drive into your MacBook Pro and restart. The installer should boot up at this point.

So basically I need to update the os on my MacBook Air then put it into the pro and it should work? The air is a 2012 13 inch

What OS is currently on the MB Air? IF it is HS or Catalina then it would be easier for you to just install https://github.com/ninxsoft/Mist & download HS with this app and then create a bootable HS from within the app. as you won't be allowed to download HS from the app store.
