How to jump start a cold battery after 5 years of storage

Dear fellow technician..

i have an old macbook pro 2019 15 inch, new sealed, stored for almost 5 years plus, decided to use it,

but battery cannot get charged, i think thr battery cell already freeze?

anyone now now to jump start the battery using lithium ion charger or power supply?

if i give charging voltage between the battery and the battery board, will it destroy the battery circuit?

You can only really try letting it charger overnight and if no life it is done..... not worth to risk killing a unit testing. Batteries are cheap if you search well ;)

@aaron75 yes, you can try that. Your battery has discharged below it‘s charging threshold and it possibly went to sleep. It will only work if you use a separate power supply. Set it to something like 6V and somewhere between 500mA -1Amp. Your power-supply readout will show you when the battery will take a charge by the amperage it draws.

Disconnect the battery from your system, if you already installed it. Connect power supply to battery positive to positive and negative to negative of course. Give it a try on the actual battery connector at the battery control board. You can also try this where the battery connects to the board control board to bypass that circuit.

Never do this unattended and never for a ling time. A few minutes at a time should suffice to wake it up. After that you can charge it properly with your system. Watch the battery for any anomaly like getting hot etc.

I found that drained out batteries never fully recover and very likely have lost a lot of their capacity. Personally I would just buy a fresh battery as a drained out 'revived' battery 'might' come back to life with some hidden issues, and trust me a burning battery is no joke as I have found out the hard way, totally killing a unit with a melted board and.a permanently stinking unusable case from the acids that leaked out. But if @oldturkey03 method revived it, then install coconutBattery to give a better idea on what condition it is in.

@livfe luckily this is only to " wake up" the battery by getting it to a charge level that is above the set threshold. The proper charging will have to be done the "normal" way. I have always been very cautious about batteries that were offered as "reconditioned" etc. Luckily these pouch batteries are pretty easy to monitor since they do swell up as soon as they are in "trouble". Never run batteries without the proper control board is the number one safety precaution.

@oldturkey03 Yes, I managed to charge one up, went away for a minute and that was when mine went mental,luckily it wasn't plugged to the charger at the time! Best to be safe and suffer to buy a fresh one. Peace of mind.
