November 2018.

Too many questions.. Super slow, cant enter recovery, diagnostics, etc

Long story short but, my macbook just started behaving ridiculously slow. The desktop got filled with thousands of icons after some icloud shenanigans apparently.

Made the icons go away by disabling stacks in view options but its still slow..

At one point i tried to do firstaid repair to the drive from inside the os and it was progressing but it shut off randomly during it.

during and after all that ive tried to boot into recovery mode or safemode or into a usb drive with os setup to try to repair the disk to see if itd improve anything but it just sits at the loading screen with fans full blast for hours.

For about 12 hrs ive also had it with the battery unplugged and have been using it as such.

Ive tried the nv ram reset and it does reset and make a sound (before the chime wouldnt even happen when the logo came on) but on subsequent resets it stops ringing.

So battery still off i plug it in do the smc reset and then the laptop turns on and i try to enter safe mode so im holding shift while its booting enough time passes and i stop holding it and the loading bar is full then the laptop turns off by itself and it hasnt come on since

Prior to this it seemed like the battery was dead since it would just not do anything without being plugged in. But yeah. When plugged in the led near the golden button in the motherboard turns on but when unplugged it quickly goes off.

Ist dies eine gute Frage?

Given the systems age I'm suspecting the battery is dying!

Let's get a better view of things with the charger plugged in see if you can download this gem of an App CoconutBattery it will allow you to see more useful info. Post a snapshot of the Apps main window here so we to can see it then we can guide you on the next steps.

Hey there! Recently someone asked a very similar question and I was able to work out a temporary solution. If you do not mind, consider reviewing my answer here: Why is my device slowed down with loud fans after battery replacement.

This should help you out!

so this laptop at that point in time, tried a SMC reset and the NVRAM reset or what not.. and it shut off and never quite came on again. tried reflashing through "revive this device" on that apple computer 2 app or whatever it was called and it detected it tried to work on it, but either eventually failed or had no effect sadly.

thus it'd be impossible to install that program. do wonder if a new battery might help it turn on again and thus install that program and overcome the poor design of this laptop

@jadonlyon - I really don't like disabling SMC so while that might offer some relief. It's sets you up to a serious safety risk!

Think it this way... I have two ropes one is brand new and fully tested, the second is a patch work of a dozen pieces and not tested.

Which one would you use to place your life on climbing a high cliff face?

@danj - I never mentioned running a disabled SMC permanently. That is risky indeed. Running SMC disabled is a temporary fix. I did mention before now that the Mac is in a stable position, you should seriously consider fixing it permanently. Running SMC disabled is temporary. Trust me, I have taken the Apple Device Support program and I have been working on Macs since 2018, I know the risks of running a Mac with no SMC.

@jadonlyon - That's Good! But it's important to point out the safety risk.

Using it without the battery will make yiur MacBook air 2018 super slow. Comnect the battery and try again, if the battery is bad then it affects the temperature of the MacBook which make the temp sensor slow down the MacBook. So considering changing your battery first

that's interesting, kind of sad that you can't use a laptop without a battery like any other battery... really hate apple lol.. the fan is not even connected to a heatsink to even be able to cool it properly

@downtoclown777 - SMC which maintains the systems health (as well as yours) goes into CPU Safe mode. When SMC loses access or encounters a high temp condition it lowers the CPU's clocking as well as ramp up the fan to push more air into the system this is the prevent the CPU or the battery from over heating. From a safety perspective you don't want the battery combust from overheating.

At this point you really want to check your battery installing this Gem CoconutBattery so you can see where it's at. Post a snapshot of the main window here so we can see if you need to replace it. It maybe there is a deeper issue here, but until we can isolate which area it's just not possible to answer.
