have a MacBook Pro replaced the screen following the guide. Now the smc cpu temp reads 255. The kernel_task is throttling the cpu thinking it’s melting. I put the old screen back on, reset the smc, nvram and physically examined the board for potential damage, but can’t see anything. Where is the cpu heat sensor located? Could it have been damaged when replacing the screen?

Your system has quite a few thermal sensors though out the system. The best way to see what's going on is to review them via a good App that can show you more graphically each of the sensors. There are a few Apps which will do that I found TG Pro is one of the best! Download the trial version and post a snapshot of the main window's display of the sensors here so we can see things. Keep in mind the list will exceed the screen so you'll need to scroll the list down to get the bottom ones in a second snapshot.
You may want to run the systems onboard diagnostics as well to see if something shows up there. Restart the system and press the D or Option (⌥) and D keys as outlined here Use Apple Diagnostics to test your Mac

I already tried the system diagnostics. The mouse barely moves and it won’t let me select a wireless network, so I was unable to run it multiple times. The temperature reading I got was from powermetrics. Under SMC CPU temp was 255
@jeremygoebel - 255 C is a failed sensor as that's the max. Your system won't really run at that temp. The rub here is which sensor as SMC CPU could be a few different ones. If you have a second Mac install TG Pro on it to see all of the sensors and maybe you can install TG Pro on this system which is currently running in CPU Safe Mode, slowing the clock cycle rate and pumping up the fan.
