No signs of live as with battery plugged in - battery or mainboard?

I have a used Lenovo T490 in great condition. Everything worked, it was charging, the battery reports 91% health and ~110 charge cycles. Then I gave it to a friend so she could play around with Linux.⏎

On the third day or so, she put the laptop down and it suddenly turned off. It won't turn on, and when plugged into the charger, no LEDs light up (e.g. power button or charging indicator).⏎

What I discovered:
- Laptop works fine with internal battery disconnected.
- When I disconnect and reconnect the internal battery, the charge indicator LEDs light up when I plug in a charger. As soon as I press the power button, it turns off again.
- I can start the laptop with the internal battery disconnected and then plug it in again while the laptop is running. The operating system recognizes the battery and says it has a charge of 77%.
- The battery does not appear to be damaged or swollen.
Before ordering a new battery, is there anything I can check to make sure the problem isn't with the mainboard or charging circuit?

What operating system is installed in the laptop, Linux, Windows or both?

Linux. However, the problem I have is before an operating system can even start, so don't think it matters.

My idea was if you have Windows installed, you can use it to create a battery report which gives an indication of the condition of the battery.
I don't know if Linux can do this or not
It gives the Design Capacity value and also the Full Charge Capacity value of the battery so even though you said it shows 77% this doesn't mean that it is 77% of the original Design Capacity charge value of the battery.
The battery condition may be down to say <10% of a good battery and maybe this is why it won't charge or even turn on when the charger is connected along with the battery.
Quicker way of isolating where the problem is, battery or motherboard

The battery still has 91% of its original full charge capacity. The battery has been through ~110 charge cycles, which is not too many. Health is reported as normal. Just before this problem occurred, the OS reported a battery life of ~6 hours when web browsing. So from that information, the battery looks OK.
The 77% I mentioned is the current charge until the battery is empty.

I've just uploaded the motherboard schematic to ifixit.
Click on the Lenovo Thinkpad T490 icon at the top right of this page and then scroll down and click on the schematic pdf file.
This will let you check why the battery voltage is not being detected so that it can operate the laptop by itself or why is causes nothing to happen when both the charger and battery are connected
