My iPhone 16 Pro Max routes audio to an unknown source — sounds distan

My iPhone 16 Pro Max (iOS 17.5.1) is acting strangely. When I try to play music or videos, the sound seems like it’s playing “in the background” or through some other device, even though I’m not on a call or connected to a Bluetooth speaker.

I reset Bluetooth and checked connections, but the phone still shows it’s “talking to someone” or stays connected to something I can’t see. It started around 2–3 days ago after a weird disconnection event.

Could this be a rogue Bluetooth pairing, AirPlay hijack, or something more serious? I’ve already tried:

– Resetting network settings

– Turning Bluetooth off/on

– Hard reset

– Forgetting all devices

Any advice? I’m worried something might be hijacking my audio.

Check your Apps! Games, video meeting. Do you see a green Dot at the top of the menu's that is the OS telling you a background App is running over the net.

What does a a USB-C wired headphone sound just as bad as the Bluetooth?

I already checked — no green or orange dot.

Nothing in the mic or app permissions is flagged, and no meeting or video apps are open. This isn’t just some app running in the background. Something is triggering the mic and audio system without any active process showing.

It’s not normal behavior. I’ve done full resets, wiped settings, and checked diagnostics. It keeps happening under specific conditions — like it’s being remotely triggered.

So no, this isn’t a Bluetooth or background app issue. It’s something deeper.

I also does it with headphones. I ran an emergency clear and it immediately went off.

Then later started again.

@thefallen - Maybe the phone microphone or speaker needs to be replaced.
