It is possible use iMac screen as a monitor, using a VGA input?

Is there any way to use the iMac as just a monitor? To connect any device with a VGA cable, even if i have to make some modifications ?

Diese Frage beantworten Ich habe das gleiche Problem

Ist dies eine gute Frage?

@lucasbiffi is yours a slot loader or a tray loader? You do know that CRT's pack a punch due to the high voltages involved with this. If you are not familiar with that you may need to reconsider. Just as a starting point, make note of this and save it :

VGA to iMac

1 red video --- 17

2 green video --- 15

3 blue video --- 13

5 gnd --- 3

6 red rtn --- 18

7 green rtn --- 16

8 blue rtn --- 14

10 gnd --- 3

12 S data --- 1

13 hsync --- 9

14 vsync --- 11

15 S clock --- 2

Pins from little white 14-pin connector on video board end of salvaged video cable to VGA connector:

1 black SCL to VGA pin 15

3 yellow SDA to VGA pin 12

4 white vsync to VGA pin 14

6 blk/wt hsync to VGA pin 13

2 org ground to VGA pins 5 and 10

11 grn Power On to power board's signal inverter

You may need that pinout to connect VGA to the monitor.

I confess I'm not very experienced. But I'd like to try. As I mentioned in the comment below, my intention is to have a monitor not for 100% practical use, like playing a video game, but rather to stream something to it, even if the quality isn't the best. I like to keep a few CRTs like this on display here at home.

@oldturkey03, As soon as I have the iMac in hand I will bring more information here

von

@lucasbiffi so basically you just want the CRT do display a VGA signal; not necessarily using it as an iMac? If so, then yes, that can be done.

von

@oldturkey03 Exactly. I like to use a Raspberry Pi to automate some images to pass through my CRTs. I also like to connect cameras to them for a sort of local streaming. Just as a design object. I think I'll receive the device today, so I can confirm some other information to understand how to do this signal conversion.

Funny you should ask, Yes you can pump the video to the display but it's not as simple as just plugging in a cable into the video board. These older displays only offered a Native Resolution 800x600 on the 15.0" (13.8" viewable area) screen. The display also supports: 640x480 at 117 Hz, 800x600 at 95 Hz, and 1024x768 at 75 Hz.

A small music group wanted to drive the screen with a video feed externally as a special effect. While we were able to get it working the image just wasn't stable for what they wanted. Ended up painting the display for a green screen fill-in.

My intention isn't to use the monitor for 100% practical purposes, like playing video games, etc. I like to experiment with the screen, and even if the result isn't the best, I like to have the monitor on so I can transmit whatever the result is. So my main goal isn't to have a perfect monitor, but to be able to use it externally and see what we can achieve.
