My phone heats up a lot whenever I put it on charge. Sometimes it gets so hot that it’s hard to hold. I’m not sure if this is normal or if the battery or charger is causing the problem. I haven’t noticed any swelling in the battery, but the heat is worrying me. Should I replace the battery or check the charger first?

Since you had already eliminated the charger as the problem, then if charging the battery at 5V or even 9V causes it to overheat then changing the battery would be the next step.

Thanks a lot for the guidance and for sharing the battery replacement guide.
I’ll go through the steps and check if replacing the battery solves the issue. One quick question though—if the phone is still usable but just gets hot while charging, is it safe to keep using it for now, or should I replace the battery as soon as possible?
I would replace the battery asap.
Failing Lithium batteries when being charged can catch fire which isn't the easiest to extinguish.
Personally I would stop using/charging it until the battery was replaced but that's just me
Absolutely, replacing the battery as soon as possible is the safest move. Lithium batteries can be unpredictable when failing, and charging a damaged one is definitely risky. I’d also avoid using or charging the phone until it’s replaced—better to be safe than sorry.

What is the make and model number of the phone?
Can you try using another known working compatible charger (or connect the phone to a computer) to see if the problem still occurs?
Doing this will either eliminate or prove that the charger is the problem.
Has the phone been dropped or gotten wet at all?

Thanks for the reply.
The phone is a Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra.
I’ve already tried a different compatible charger and also connected it to my computer, but the heating issue still happens. That’s why I don’t think the charger is the cause.
Also, the phone hasn’t been dropped or exposed to water. The problem mostly appears when I’m charging or using the phone for heavy tasks.
Do you think this could be related to the battery or something else on the hardware side?
