so got hit with the no power problem. i got that problem fixed by getting a new power board. and saved all the important things on my hard drive. so my question now is if i remove it and plug it into a external hard drive trey or plug it directly into my pc via sata and reformat it will it work or will the wd encryption brick it?

Yes, your hard drive should still work after reformatting as long as it’s physically healthy. If the drive was encrypted with WD Encryption, reformatting it will erase the encryption along with all data, essentially giving you a fresh drive you can use. Just make sure to back up anything important before reformatting and connect it via SATA or an external enclosure to do the format safely

If the drive uses Western Digital hardware encryption, it depends on the enclosure. Many WD external drives encrypt data using the USB bridge board. If you connect the bare drive via SATA, the data may appear unreadable. However, you can still reformat the drive, which should make it usable again, but all existing data will be lost.
