HMD Skyline spare parts restock?

Does anyone know if/when iFixit will be restocking spare parts for the HMD Skyline? Critical components like the screen and battery have been out of stock for a decent amount of time.

HMD is no help and directs me to iFixit (makes sense since the parts are sold directly on the iFixit store for this device).

Can anyone confirm? I'm still within my return window on this device and if the parts are discontinued I might as well return the device.

I got an update from iFixit:

> I do apologize for the inconvenience, at this time though, we do not have an ETA for these screens. We're having issues getting them in from the suppliers, as they are imported.

> I wish you luck in your search for a replacement screen for your HMD Skyline.

> Have a good day!

Was anybody able to get a new screen?

@dennis18754 Has anyone tried ordering directly from HMD? I see they have a page where they are selling the screen, although the site appears to be in India; I don't know what their shipping policies are, though.

This is the repair forum where volunteers (and sometimes repair staff) answer user questions about fixing their devices. As such, the iFixit Store personnel don't tend to hang out in here just in case someone posts a Store-related question.

You'll be far better off using the contact form or emailing them at support@ifixit.com.

They also have a whole page on how to locate parts they may not stock or have in stock that might help.

Thanks Jerry. My first stop was https://www.ifixit.com/Support and I didn't see either of these options (I probably overlooked them) which is why I made this post to see if anyone else had information. I just submitted my questions using the link and the e-mail you provided. I'll respond back to this thread with whatever answer I receive in case someone else stumbles on this thread.

As much as I like the HMD Skyline overall, the lack of parts & limited software update policy have me thinking I should return it while I can and wait on the Fairphone 6. We'll see what the iFixit team says.

Thanks for the help!

@nightwalke24204 Yeah, I have to admit that the contact form takes a bit of searching to locate; I should probably let them know they need to make it more accessible.

von

Ifixit support do not know when or if they will be getting skyline parts.

von

@mrdavidhope Sorry to hear that; unfortunately iFixit can only stock parts they can get so it all depends on the supplier, which in this case doesn't appear to be helping.

von

Thanks Jerry. To be fair iFixit tried to be helpful, but it doesn't help HMD's reputation if the phones are repairable but there are no parts.

Just talked to HMD support, apparently their contract with Ifixit ended, and so now GSMNet is responsible for spare parts for the Skyline.

Thank you! I've successfully found the part I need after months of searching!

HMD have been linking to GSMnet from their repairability pages for several months now, but guess what? No batteries in stock, but plenty of other components and parts.

I also had a strange experience recently whereby I shipped an out-of-warranty Nokia 8.3 to CTDI because of an expanding battery, and they shipped it back after providing a quote (€303 for a battery replacement) because they were 'leaving the market'.

So HMD must have cancelled their care contract with them too.

Thank you. Gsmnet availability not perfect, but much better than iFixit. Ordered screen from them.

This is horrible. Why wouldn't they use another supplier and stand behind their products. This is a great idea that is falling short

Erin, are you talking about HMD or iFixit? From what I've seen, wherever possible iFixit sources parts from the original manufacturer; I know they carry genuine Google and Motorola parts in addition to HMD. But how do you get OEM parts if the OEM isn't supplying them?

So yes, I suppose they could probably source from aftermarket parts, but then they're not OEM, are they?

I don't work for iFixit so I can't speak for them, but they seem to be caught between a rock and a hard place; they'd prefer to supply OEM parts, but what are they supposed to do when they can't get them? In the case of iPhones and other Apple parts, Apple won't supply genuine OEM parts so they have to use aftermarket so there is precedent, but at what point do you give up on the original manufacturer and move to aftermarket?

Just some things to think about...
