Computer shuts off after a while of usage

My computer will shut off after a little while of usage. And i noticed that it only does it when i am on the computer and in the process of opening a file or loading a website, the usual activities one would use a computer in the first place! I just vaccumed out the inside of any dust bunnies, and left the panel open to get more air, and once again it did it again while i was opening a web site. Now i think it maybe the power supply. Any other suggestions?

Believe it or not, leaving the case open will result in poorer cooling then if the side panel were in place, the system fans create a flow of air that ususually comes in through the front, and sometimes the top, and goes out the back, and leaving the side panel open will ruin that cycle. Either way, it seems like it is overheating. What model is the computer?

It's probably overheating, it has a K7-8 series AMD Athlon 64 CPU and these processor's were some of the hottest running that I have ever worked with in the past. It's probably overheating due to extensive use, you might have some background programs that are really weighing it down. You might want to get a new CPU cooler, and install that, with some new thermal compound. That will definently cool it down.

I believe you are correct and that the power supply is bad. I would also check the temp of the cpu. Due to the age of the machine and the possibility that a faulty power supply could damage the mother board you may want to consider replacement of the unit rather than repair. Ralph

Well iam gonna replace my whole computer tower, just waiting for the funds and the right computer. But i just need this thing to last until then so that one i can keep access to the internet and two be able to transfer my music and other information to the new computer. So i was hoping for a good way to purchase a cheap power supply that will do the job without breaking my wallet?

Believe it or not E-Bay or Alibaba can get you in touch with international suppliers that have reputable products. (since thats where they're made anyway nowadays) Just be sure to check their rep.

But he other two users are spot on, there are apps out there available at places like download.com that will run your PC at diffferent speeds to determine if overheating of the CPU is the problem.

Are you getting a Blue Screen of Death or just a power shutdown? If just a shutdown I definitly suspect the CPU, easiest fic for that in the short term is gettting some fresh thermal paste and reseating the fan and heat radiator. Or just upgrade, they are inexpensive.

i believe your problem in ethier the cpu/proccessor is overheating or you might have some virus, to find virus start win in safe node: power the computer and immediately keep pressing f8 and in safe mode try to install anivirus software or something similar if your pc does not turn off in safe mode that means you have virus or conflict between one software and another, or power the pc and press f2 or f12 or f1 it depends on your pc what button that it is but when the menu comesup choose the option that says repair and let it run you might not even need new parts, hope this was helpeful.

If you find replacing the power supply or reseating the CPU would the fix the shutdown during use and these did not help. Mine shut down after 15 seconds after turning on. As an electronic diagnostic technician. I looked over the motherboard in my Emachine I just rehabbed. I found three electrolytic capacitors has bulging tops. One of these is running hot. That is a tell-tale signs of failing capacitors.

I am going to pull the motherboard out and replace those swollen capacitors. These may be the source of the problem and should solve this problem.

Good electrolytic capacitors have flat tops. Any of those have a bulging tops are the troublemakers and should be replaced.

I have an amplifier with a capacitor with a bulging top and shorted out, it blew out the entire left channel.

After having replacing six of those electrolytic capacitors on that board. That PC never shut down again. It kept right on working.

I have just resolved this problem at my area of work. You are correct to say it may be a power supply issue. If you look inside the computer, you should see two bulged capacitors. Very easy to find and see. Thanks for asking, Matt of Martins TV.
