Why won’t the dvd player work

Can you hear or check if the dvd disc is spinning after it has been inserted?

If you can't hear it, note the position of the label on the disc before inserting it e.g. writing on the label the correct way or upside down etc when looking at the disc being inserted and then after it fails to read, eject the disc and check if the label is still in the same position or not. If it has moved this indicates that the disc has been spinning

If the disc has been spinning, try cleaning the laser lens (examples only) in the disc drive and check if that resolves the problem.
