Die PlayStation 2 wird oft als "PS2" bezeichnet. Sie kam in Japan im März 2000 heraus. Reparaturen erfordern nur ganz normales Werkzeug, sind aber manchmal etwas trickreich.

Game discs struggle to spin up to read

I have a Fat PS2 (SCPH-30003) where I have observed the disc struggle to spin up. It pulses five times then stops and never reaches any kind of speed.

I've encouraged the disc to spin with a pointy tool which has led to the disc reading and playing correctly, but I need to leave the top off of the case off to get the disc to read this way.

This happens with both PSX and PS2 game discs.

Hi all, digging deeper, I found the cable connecting the spindle motor to the motherboard was damaged. I should have mentioned this is a recently acquired machine! I have a new motor spindle on the way and will keep you all updated. If that doesn't work next step will be a laser replacement, though I'm certain that's not the problem.

Alright! Hopefully that is it! Please let us know how it goes :)!

@dan0 I will do! I'm expecting delivery in a week or maybe a little longer as the new spindle motor is coming from abroad. Watch this space!

Will do!

Thank you :)!

Well, the new motor helped some, but with further investigation it seems my PS2 (eBay acquisition) has somehow been knocked out of calibration. I've done some tweaking (and have a spare laser just in case) and got some discs to read so far. I'm now looking at a piece of hardware that connects to test points and helps with calibration. Wish me luck!

Hi!

Could be caused by multiple things to be honest…

I would test With a new laser first. They are known to fail.

Can you let us know how that goes?

Thanks!

Sounds like the motor is burning out. You could replace the motor, but I'm not too familiar with this particular console , so I can't say for sure whether or not this would require soldering. If you can do that, great! If not, I'd say the next best thing would be to replace the entire disc drive. Okay, you're probably wondering, "Where can I find one of those?" Well, to be perfectly honest, I'm not really sure. On the other hand, we are talking about parts for the best-selling console of all-time, so it shouldn't be too hard to find a working disc drive. 160 million consoles sold=lots of broken consoles=lots of non-disc drive failures=lots of used disc drives. I mean, it'll at least be easier than finding one for a GameCube (Those are hard to find for other reasons, too, including but not limited to the fact that GameCubes almost never break. If you happen to see a GameCube disc drive for sale somewhere, PLEASE TELL ME. I'm looking, somewhat unsuccessfully, for one myself.). I would look on sites like eBay, Amazon, and maybe Etsy. Just be careful and read the reviews. If you want a motor, you could look for one on similar websites. You might also be able to get away with using a more standard motor, but be careful to find the right size and voltage if you do this, or it might not work right.

Oh, and don't use a pointy tool on a game disc. You could scratch the label side, which, ironically, tends to affect readability more heavily than a scratch on the data side. The reason for this is the fact that the protective plastic on the data side of a DVD disc is thicker and more robust than the plastic on the label side, so it's easier to puncture the data layer from the label side, thus destroying the data and making the disc unreadable if that particular area of the data layer was storing anything. A minor scratch shouldn't hurt, but if it's deep enough, you could destroy the disc.

Of course. Thanks for this. I've order a new spindle motor because the cable looks damaged (maybe I only need the cable, but as it's attached I thought I whole new unit would be a safer bet). It'll arrive in a week or so then I will replace and let you know.

As for the game disc comment - I have one trash game (e.g. awful, not broken or damaged!) whose disc I'm using while testing. Once that works I'll move onto my good games!
