Hi! I will be assuming you are using wireless wifi and not cable ethernet!

Please do the following:

  • Remove / "forget" your wifi. (Guide for windows 10)
    • Make sure that you remember your wifi password before your do this!
  • Restart your laptop.
  • Log into and connect to your wifi agian.
  • It is great that you've updated your wifi/network drivers! Also, please check if you have any updates for your operating system or BIOS too.

Please answer the following:

  • Has this always been like this or is this a sudden change?
  • Are you far away from your router/ access point?
    • Do you have multiple routers/ access points for your own network?
    • If you check available networks on your phone or on your laptop, how many networks can you see (that are is not your own).
    • Can you check how many "bars of wifi" you have? By open the wifi quick access menu, or by entering Settings > Network & Internet > Wifi, and then you should see the wifi symbol next to your wifi name, and that wifi symbol will have an X out of 4 bars (on Windows 11). This can alternatively be done on your phone.
  • Are your router / access point connected to cellular, or does you have e.g., fiber internet?
  • Do you have the same problem with slow wifi speeds on another device, e.g. you phone?
    • For a comparison, enter any wifi speed test website on your laptop and on another device (e.g., your phone) and then you'll get comparable results. Make sure that you at the same place and withing a short time span when taking the test between the different devices. Please post those results in a comment here, both up and down speeds.
    • Does these problems happen on any specific time of day, or is it always like this?

There are some more advanced wifi tests that we can do. But I think this is a good start.

If you only are only having bad results on your laptop, especially if it's a sudden problem. Then it is likely that the wifi card in your laptop is going bad considering that you've updated your network drivers. Your wifi card can either be replaced, alternatively you can by a small usb-wifi adapter out of most electronic and general stores. Tho, it might also be a configuration on your laptop that is incorrect.

If you are having low speeds on both your laptop and another wifi device, then it is most likely either:

  • Your router going bad.
  • Congested traffic.
  • Far away from access point (or other signal loss related issue).

Please reply and we will continue to guide you through this all :)

Good luck,

Cheers

I had the same issue and drivers weren’t the problem at all. Turned out my router was stuck on the 2.4GHz band. Switching to 5GHz instantly doubled my speed. Worth checking if your device supports it.
