Laptop making a hiccup or ticking noise. Could this be a failing fan, hard drive, or coil whine? What tests should I run before opening the device?

These are too new for spinning drives, so the issue is not related to the SSD unless there is a faulty EMF filter on it causing a similar sound. It's more likely a fan issue where the bearings are going out.
That being said, post a video like @oldturkey03 mentioned -- once we have the video, we will know more but chances are it is due to a fan issue.

Yes, those sounds usually point to fan issues, a failing hard drive, or coil whine. Before opening it, try these tests:
Listen closely: ticking that changes with load often means fan or coil whine; rhythmic clicks suggest HDD failure.
Check SMART data (CrystalDiskInfo) if you have an HDD.
Run a fan stress test (HWMonitor/FanControl).
Load test CPU/GPU—coil whine changes pitch under load.
Boot from a live USB to rule out software causes.

@ghanniubou not sure what the hiccup noise might sound like but a ticking noise is usually related to a failing HDD. Post some short sound file/video with your question. That way we can hear the sound and hopefully help you further. Bilder zu einer vorhandenen Frage hinzufügen

@oldturkey03 Too new to have a HDD - HP dumped it after the G4 and the G5 and up have all been M.2 only.
