Repair guides and support for Sony Walkman cassette players.

Sony MZ-S1 NetMD Sports Walkman MiniDisc Recorder Won't turn on.

My Sony MZ-S1 won't turn on with its cable or with a battery, but there is no visible damage at all. I think I may have to dissemble it, and I know how to do that already, but what next? How would I be able to fix it?

Ist dies eine gute Frage?

Hi @sofiambecerril

Here's the service manual that will help.

On p.34 there's the block diagram showing the control/power supply section.

First check if power is getting through the thermistor TH601 and the line filter T601 to the board. (The board layout diagrams are on p.36-p.37)

If it is next check if the power button is working OK etc.

Hopefully a start to finding out what's wrong.

It’s frustrating when a classic piece of tech like the Sony MZ-S1 goes silent, especially since those "Sports" models were built to be tanks. Since you’re comfortable with disassembly, you’ve already cleared the biggest hurdle.

When a MiniDisc player refuses to power on via both battery and DC cable, the issue is usually an interruption in the power delivery circuit. Here is a troubleshooting roadmap for when you get inside:

1. Inspect the Battery Terminals

Even if there is no "visible damage," microscopic oxidation or a slight leak from a years-old AA battery can create a high-resistance layer on the contacts.

  • The Fix: Use a cotton swab with 90% Isopropyl Alcohol to scrub the internal battery contacts. If you see any green or white crust, use a tiny bit of white vinegar to neutralize the alkaline leak, then follow up with alcohol.

2. Check the DC Jack (Power Port)

The MZ-S1 uses a switching jack. When you plug in the power cable, a physical leaf switch inside the jack disconnects the battery to prevent charging it.

  • The Problem: These leaf switches often get stuck or oxidized in the "closed" position, tricking the device into thinking a cable is plugged in (cutting off the battery) or vice versa.
  • The Fix: Spray a small amount of DeoxIT or electronic contact cleaner into the DC jack and insert/remove the power plug rapidly 10–20 times to clean the internal switch.

3. Look for the "Solder Bloom" or Cold Joints

Sony boards from this era occasionally suffer from cold solder joints near the power input.

  • The Fix: Once the board is out, inspect the pins where the DC jack and battery terminals meet the PCB. If the solder looks dull or has a tiny ring around the pin, "reflow" it by touching it with a soldering iron and a tiny bit of fresh solder.

4. Test the Internal Fuse

MiniDisc players often have a tiny surface-mount (SMD) fuse near the power intake (often labeled F1 or TH1 on the board).

  • The Fix: Use a multimeter in Continuity Mode. If the fuse doesn't "beep," it's blown and needs to be bridged or replaced.

A Quick Tip on the "HOLD" Switch

It sounds simple, but double-check that the physical HOLD switch isn't stuck halfway. If the device thinks HOLD is engaged, it won't respond to the power/play buttons. Sometimes the plastic slider snaps off internally while the electronic switch stays in the "ON" position.

Would you like me to help you find the specific service manual or circuit board layout for the MZ-S1 so you can locate the fuse?

@khushiupadhyay LMBO, you need to at least delete this "Would you like me to help you find the specific service manual or circuit board layout for the MZ-S1 so you can locate the fuse?" when you are using AI. Let me quote my colleague @dadibrokeit

Readers are cautioned to take this advice with a large grain of salt. All indications are that it is AI-generated and as such has no common sense. You should also not assume the person posting this has any knowledge of the subject at all, given that they are not the author of this post; an AI database produced it, so it is useless to ask for further information or clarification.

A word of caution. We do not mind if you use AI but you will have to be transparent about using it. You need to inform the community that your answers are generated/augmented by AI.
