The Dell Latitude 7400 series was introduced in 2019, with the 2-in-1 variant officially released on June 7, 2019. 14-inch display with Intel Core i5 or i7 processors, and the model number P100G (and regulatory type P100G001).

No sound coming from device after updating everything

Hi, I bought this laptop used recently and it hasn't been able to play any sound at all since I opened the box. I've gone through basically every troubleshooting step I could find online. Tried Windows troubleshooting, every Dell SupportAssist option, updated RealTek drivers both automatically and manually. It can play sound through Bluetooth, albeit with a strange echo-y quality that isn't present on my other devices when I use my headphones.

I don't think there's much else I can do that won't involve opening up the laptop to get at the hardware. I've never worked on a laptop before though so I'm not sure if it would be smart for me to open it up myself.

Well, it was exactly what I thought it was. The laptop must have gotten jostled around in shipping enough to disconnect the speaker cable. After getting the right screwdriver to open up the back cover, with the guide of the Dell service manual to find it, all I had to do was reconnect it and the laptop plays sound just fine now. Having never opened a computer of any kind, I'm delighted it was this easy (and a little shocked it never showed up as being an issue on any of my various diagnostic tests).

As a sidenote: the 2-in-1 variant of the 7400 seems to be built completely differently so future readers beware. Follow the service manual. It has a lot of step by step instructions with pictures included.

Hi @tygerbright

If you had specified that it was a 7400 2in1 in your question I would have linked the service manual for it and not the one for the 7400.

We can only provide answers based on the information provided by the people asking the questions,.

@jayeff Oh I didn't mean you in particular! Totally my own fault I didn't mention it in my question. I meant the 7400 ifixit guide in general, which seems to only cover the 7400 and not the 2in1 variant.

Thanks for the solution.

@tygerbright

fair enough.

Mostly, the repair guides in ifixit are specific to the model indicated by the title of the guide unless variations are noted at various steps in the guide itself.

At this stage, no one has submitted a repair guide specifically related to the 7400 2in1.

Most guides on ifixit are created and posted by users (such as yourself) who are interested in repairing their own devices and also in helping others to fix their devices themselves.

If you feel like creating a guide as you are repairing your device and posting on ifixit, please feel free to do so. The community will thank you for doing so.

Hi @tygerbright

Can you hear audio when using wired headphones, plugged into the headphone socket in the laptop?

If you can then it could be a faulty headphone socket that's the cause of the problem.

When headphones are plugged in, the plug operates an internal switch in the socket that when operated, signals the BIOS to switch the audio away from the internal speakers and to the headphones. When the headphones are unplugged, the switch should release and the audio is now switched back to the speakers.

If you can hear audio when using wired headphones, try plugging/unplugging the headphones into the laptop 4-5 times to see if this frees the switch.

If there's still no audio in the speakers when the headphones are unplugged after doing the above, then it could be that the headphone socket is faulty, the speakers are faulty or both.

Here's the service manual for the laptop. Go to the bottom of p.40 to see how to remove/replace the speakers. Search online for P743W to find suppliers that suit you best.

It's easier to replace the speakers first to see if this fixes it as replacing the socket requires unsoldering it from the motherboard and soldering in a replacement. You will need smd (surface mount device) soldering skills and soldering tools to do the replacement. The motherboard would also have to be removed from the case as well to do this.

If you can't hear audio when using wired headphones, then it could be a faulty headphone jack and faulty speakers or a motherboard problem and further testing using the schematics would be needed.

There IS sound with wired headphones, but plugging/unplugging several times did nothing.

@tygerbright

You may have to replace the speakers to isolate whether it is the speakers or the headphone socket that is the problem

Before opening the laptop, here are two final safe checks:

BIOS audio test – Restart and enter BIOS (usually F2 on Dell). If there’s a built-in audio test and you hear nothing, that confirms a hardware issue.

Headphone jack test (wired) – If wired headphones also produce no sound, the internal audio output may be faulty.

If hardware is the culprit, opening the laptop can be safe if you follow a Dell service manual, which clearly shows speaker and cable locations. Often, reseating a loose speaker connector fixes the issue—no soldering required. That said, if the laptop is still under any seller warranty, professional repair is the safer route.

Once audio is restored, keeping drivers and system components healthy is key. A tool like Systweak Advanced System Optimizer can help by automatically maintaining audio drivers, fixing registry issues, and preventing software conflicts that sometimes cause sound distortion (like the echo you’re hearing over Bluetooth). It’s especially useful for used systems that may have leftover driver remnants.

There isn't a specific sound test, but one of the tests in the Dell pre-boot diagnostics tool should be emitting beeps and it isn't. I'm almost certain this is a speaker issue, but I don't have the right screwdriver to open the laptop and I'd like to return it for a better one anyway. Thank you for the help!
