This is my first time self-servicing any of my electronics on this level. The tape and CD players both work, but no sound comes out. Got the thing open enough to take a look at the circuitboard, but wanted to see if maybe there's something clearly wrong for me to start at before I go wild goose hunting for my problem?

@aubreywilson as far as I can see ;-) your board looks pretty clean and nothing to obvious. Double check the headphone jack. If you get audio from that but not the speakers, it is possible that the jack is stuck. Insert and remove a pair of headphones a few times in rapid succession and/or use a few puffs of canned air to remove any debris that may keep the jack in a closed position.
For anything after that you would need to start testing the circuitry from the speakers on backwards. First suspect would be the power amplifier IC302 located on the main board. Page 22 in the Sony CFD S05 service manual
