Galaxy S7 Edge buttons light up but don’t work

On my Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, the “Back” and “Recent Apps” buttons light up but don’t respond to touch. What could cause this, and what should I try to fix it? Software reset, safe mode, or is it likely a hardware issue?
