HP EliteBook i5 8th Gen won’t turn on, USB-C charging not recognized,

Hello, I have an HP EliteBook i5 8th Gen (model 850 G5) and I’m facing a problem:

- The laptop suddenly shut down after normal use and now it won’t turn on at all.

- USB-C charging LED does not light up at all when plugged in.

- When I press and hold the power button for 20–30 seconds (Power Reset), I see intermittent white and yellow LED blinking, then nothing happens.

- I have confirmed that the charger is 100% working and original.

- I have tried cleaning the USB-C port gently and left it on the charger for 10–15 minutes, but still no response.

Has anyone faced the same issue? Could it be the USB-C port, the battery, or the motherboard/power circuitry? Any advice on what to try before taking it for professional repair would be greatly appr

eciated!

@ghanibou yes, any of this "Could it be the USB-C port, the battery, or the motherboard/power circuitry?" is a possibility. Now it will be up to you to dig a bit further. First thing is to open it up, use HP EliteBook 850 G5 Maintenance And Service Guide to work on that. Time to trace the power and see where it stops. Then you will need a multimeter to measure the voltage on the board side of the USB-C connector. See if that show the voltage. Then move toward the battery etc. and check on the battery connector to see what voltage you get on that, with the AC power adapter connected.

Once you have your computer open, take some well focused image and post those with your question. That way we can see what you see an hopefully can help you to point a few things out. Bilder zu einer vorhandenen Frage hinzufügen

This issue on the HP EliteBook 850 G5 is most commonly related to a power delivery or motherboard power circuit failure rather than software.

Start with a full power drain: unplug the charger, disconnect the internal battery (if you can open the back), then hold the power button for 30–40 seconds. Reconnect only the charger and try to power it on.

If the USB-C LED still does not light up, that’s an important clue.

On this model, no charging LED usually means power isn’t reaching the system board. The intermittent white/yellow blinking during the reset often points to power rail instability, which can be caused by:

Failed USB-C charging IC

Damaged DC-in circuitry

Shorted or dead battery pulling power down

Motherboard power MOSFET failure

A bad battery alone usually still shows a charging LED, so the motherboard or USB-C power circuit is the more likely culprit.
