Support and repair guides for the Lenovo ThinkPad T480. Released in January 2018.

Thinkpad won’t charge

I have been having a hard time charging my laptop. The only way it would charge is if I tensioned the charging cable, so I bought a new charger. The new charger charged for a bit and then it stoped charging the laptop too( I have also tried charging the laptop from the thunderbolt port nothing there either). I have updated the bios to the latest version, so I’m having a hard time figuring out the problem. Could it be the charging port itself?

Hi @pete8065

If there's no indication at all that the charger has been connected to the laptop since there are 2 charging ports i.e. USB-C and the Thunderbolt port it shouldn't be the individual port connector itself that is the problem unless they're both physically damaged somehow or both loose from the systemboard.

If they both seem OK physically, you may have to start checking the power input circuits on the systemboard to find out if there's something common to both inputs that is faulty or if there are two individual (yet similar) faults

Looking at p.67 of the schematic there are 2 power mosfets and a fuse associated with each port on the input i.e. PQ1 & PQ2 & PF1(Thunderbolt port). PQ5 & PQ6 & PF2 (USB-C port). See the image below showing their location on the systemboard. The top image is of the entire board and the lower image is zoomed in showing the components for that section of the board.

It would be unusual for both of the fuses to be blown although it may be wise to check them anyway to make sure that they're both OK.

Here's the hardware maintenance manual that will help with the disassembly.

If you find the problem and it's a faulty component on the systemboard, the component model (type) information is shown next to the component ID as shown in the schematic linked above.

As most of the components on the board will not have any designations, here's a link where you can download the boardview file. Use the boardview file to locate the components as designated in the schematic. Note it is a .tvw type file so you will need to use a boardviewer program example to open and view it.

Hopefully a start.
