@peterdalby what make and model and year are we checking? What are the symptoms? Usually with the older cylindrical coils you just check the primary and secondary winding. For the primary winding you use a multimeter and set it to something like 200 ohms (depends on your meter of course) then measure the resistance between the positive and negative terminals of the coil. You should get anywhere between 2.6-4.0 ohms. For the secondary winding set your meter high, somewhere in the 20k ohms. Then measure the resistance between the negative terminal and the center terminal, where the thick coil wire (high tension wire) connects to. You should get a reading between 6-15kOhm If any of those values are off you have a faulty coil. See if this Checking Ignition Systems will help you out

1976 MG midget. Car won’t start and I do have fuel.
If you have knowledge our experience on using a multimeter to test for electric current please give me a short but to the point description on what to test many thanks

@peterdalby do you have spark at the spark plugs when the engine turns over? A 1976, that would make it a MG Midget 1500. What country is it from. That model flopped in the USA due to new emission control standards.

Try checking for corrosion between the points in the distributor.
