I cleaned the battery conections and the alarm stays on
I cleaned the battery connections and when I re-attached them the alarm activates. I tried using the key to unlock the doors, but that does nothing.

If you're describing the factory alarm system, sometimes battery replacement triggers the alarm system. Reset can be with the remotes or inserting the ignition key and turning on ignition to silence the alarm. The door ajar switch is part of the alarm system. You should be able to manually unlock driver or passenger door. If not used often, locks can corrode, making it difficult to unlock with a key. Door lube, graphite in liquid form, lubes and eliminates corrosion. If necessary, disconnect battery negative then unlock a door for entry, reconnect battery.
