A1932 (820-01521) – Internal Display Not Detected After Sleep

Hi all,

I’m troubleshooting a MacBook Air A1932 (2018, EMC 3184) that suffered water damage. I’ve done extensive testing and want to get some expert opinions before proceeding with repairs.

Behaviour:

  1. Internal display works on cold boot, but after closing the lid and reopening:
    • Keyboard lights come on, sound works
    • Screen remains completely black
    • Flashlight test shows nothing on display
  2. External display tests:
    • Using a USB-C hub to pass power + HDMI → external video does NOT work
    • Removing power from the hub → HDMI video works normally (without sound passing)
    • After closing the lid, the external display continues to work while the internal display never comes back

Fixes:

  • From the water damage and inspection to the original components, I already replaced the audio board (due to signs of corrosion), which fixed the not-booting problem resulting from the spill.
  • Now, with these "new" problems, I'm thinking of buying a replacement A1932 logic board (820-01521) with a matching Touch ID/power button.

Am I correct in thinking this is the way forward, or are there any other tests I can do? Maybe other parts that I should replace first?

Thanks

Did you check the lid detection logic? There is a rare earth magnet within the lid which interfaces with a Hall sensor to detect if the lid is up or down. This series has one in the Right Speaker and a second within the microphone array.

Thanks for the suggestion regarding the Hall sensor, I did some further testing based on that.

I was able to trigger the Hall sensor using a magnet near the microphone array (left side of the keyboard). When triggered, the screen turns off as expected. After removing the magnet, the system wakes normally (keyboard backlight and system activity return), but the display remains black. I did the flashlight test again, and I can confirm I can see the image, but it doesn't have a backlight.

Additionally, once system enters this "no backlight" state, any sleep event (closing lid, lock screen or idle timeout) causes the display to go completely black. I'm only able to turn the screen back on after forcing shutdown (hold power button for 10 secs).

I also noticed that the right-side antenna cable (from the antenna bar assembly) was initially disconnected. When reconnecting, the laptop does not power on (disconnected, the system boots normally).

No corrosion on the antenna connection, so defo need to replace it.
