Transmission drain and fill
I have a 2011 Rav4, 2-wheel drive. The owners manual states that I should drain and refill my transmission? Others have told me no. Thoughts?

If the owners manual indicates it should be replaced, the reason is that the fluid wears out. It no longer lubericates well and it carries ultra fine metal as the gears wear. You will observe this in the darkness of the oil when you drain it.

I have to agree with Michael; the owners manual is written by the manufacturer, and who would know better than the people who built the car? I'd go with their recommendation.

This would best be done at a reputable repair shop. You dot have th proper tools and facility to do this. You would need a filter kit for this procedure.

John, you're making assumptions. How do you know Alan doesn't have the tools or space? I've replaced engines in my driveway; I see no reason why a transmission can't be drained and refilled by the owner given a basic set of tools. And yes, that would even include replacing the filter if appropriate.
After all, that's the whole point of this site - to enable people to do their own repairs rather than paying someone else.
