Currently I've been working on my uncle's controller for a few hours now that I got the charging port replacement I need. I've done what I've usually do, try and learn about the part I'm dissembling, the only problem I keep finding is.. there's no videos about the exact motherboard my uncle's controller have, not only that but it also has a surface mounted charging port or "SMD" for short. Tried using some solder and flux to get the said SMD off but I can't, even then the motherboard has the white plastic block extremely close to the 5 pins in the back so the soldering tool my uncle bought me can't get in-between unless I wanna melt the tan ribbon and the white plastic block. I'm making this in hoping there's someone out there that has to replace a charging port on a MSU_VX8_0.14 before. Also, the SMD has four legs that sits on top of the motherboard with two plastic legs that go through said motherboard and 5 pins in a line in the back. Help would really be appreciated, anyways I hope everyone is having a good day.

Hi!

Is it possible to upload some pictures regarding the motherboard and what you are trying to replace?

Hi!

Thanks for the pictures!

So, this is the newest revision DualShock 3 controller model.

The plastic block you are talking about is the LED board.

You need to replace the Micro USB connector. It's hold by the solder points on the upper side of the motherboard. Below, I think it's connected with a few pins as well.

De-solder all the connections for the Micro USB Connector and get it off, then solder the new one back in.

Since you are stating that it's hard to get in between there,, I recommend to use a smaller soldering iron point. Otherwise it will be hard to get it out (you most likely need to have some micro soldering equipment).

Another possibility: Solder the LED board out and then solder the Micro USB connector out.

Please let me know if you have any question :)!

Yeah I got good news and just a little bad news, that port is finally off! However I was doing a destructive path (the port had 100% free lead, before the destructive path I added some solder thinking I could move it up if I did that, didn't work) and I wasn't too careful so.. two structural pads (top right and bottom right) came off with the USB port, however. According to IFixIt's AI, it's all okay, because I still have the 5 pins and the two left (top, bottom) pads which is all has gotten flux, wicked, and cleaned with 91% rubbing alcohol. I apologize for the late response though, I went to bed after that.

Alright, well at least you got it off :)!

I think those do not matter as they are just "holding" points. It's not required to let the USB connector work.

You can always upload some pictures regarding the broken pads so that we can take a look as well.

Again, I think you are fine, but to confirm, you can upload new pictures.

Thank you!

Yeah, for now at the moment I got the two that still have structure soldered on. At the moment though, I have not checked to see if I could possibly buy a small soldering tip that can fit in-between the LED board and the back of the mini USB port to get to the five pins. So as of the moment I'm gonna try a trick I've been somewhat looking into which is the sewing needle trick. I just got to place the sewing needle next to the soldering tip and use some good copper wire to keep said needle in place on the soldering tip. Also sand the tip so the solder sticks on the needle. Anyways, sorry for the late response but thanks for the help again!

My pleasure! Hopefully that will do the trick! Please let us know how it goes :)!
