My car dies but not all the time if I let it sit for about ten minutes is starts up

My son's car was exhibiting similar symptoms and it took me forever to track down the problem. Turned out to be an intermittent fault in the crankshaft position sensor. It would stop sending signals to the ECU, which would then assume the engine wasn't turning and shut down everything else; fuel, spark, etc. A new sensor fixed it right up. It wasn't setting any engine codes either, except for just one time I saw a CPS code, but every other time I checked it was clear.
I can't guarantee that's the same problem as yours, but dying out of the blue can be difficult to diagnose so it's worth checking.
