I have a 1st gen HomePod. It has always worked well until one day a loud buzzing sound came from the speaker. It happens every time it is on for just a few minutes. I have to unplug it to get the persistent tone to stop. When i plug it back in it works fine for a few minutes and then it makes that loud buzzing noise.

Loud buzzing sounds in audio equipment can sometimes be caused by faulty capacitors in the power supply circuit in the device.
Looking at the image in Step 13 of the ifixit HomePod auseinander bauen guide there are two large electrolytic capacitor seen
Open the speaker and check if the capacitors are domed, bulging, leaking etc - see image below
One is a 1000µF 63V but unfortunately I can't see the value on the other one. It will be printed on the side of the capacitor.
If they're faulty and need to be replaced it is important to note which way they are inserted on the board. Electrolytic capacitors are polarity dependent and if installed the wrong way will fail (sometimes spectacularly) very soon after the power is connected.
There's a stripe down one side of the capacitor which indicates the -ve (negative) leg of the capacitor. Conversely the circuit board has a +ve (positive) symbol printed on the board showing where the +ve leg of the capacitor should go.
Perhaps take pictures before un-soldering the capacitors from the board and also note their values (if they're different) so as not to confuse which way they are installed and which one goes where when soldering in the replacements
