I've had this happen with one of my older iPads. It suddenly went black and wouldn't charge at all. In my case, it turned out to be a dirty charging port, so I carefully cleaned out the lint with a plastic toothpick and tried a different cable and charger. If that doesn't work, try a force restart. If it's still completely dead, the battery, charging port, or charging IC could be faulty and it will likely need to be checked by a repair shop.
