Die Trickle Power LED ist orange, alle anderen sind grün, die CPU TEMP LED leuchtet nicht.

Man hört kurz das optische Laufwerk und die HDDs hochfahren, das wars. Alle Lüfter drehen.

Habe mittlerweile alles durch: Komplett innengereinigt, RAMs gezogen Kontakte poliert und die Slots mit Kontaktspray behandelt, alle Laufwerke abgezogen, GraKa ersetzt, PRAM Batterie getauscht, CPU getauscht incl. massig Staub aus Heatsink und Northbridge entfernen, SMC Reset.

Fällt jemandem noch etwas hilfreiches ein, außer Schrottcontainer?

Zunächst erstmal die technischen Daten des Geräts:

• Intel Xeon W-3223
• 96 GB Apple RAM
• Radeon Pro W6600X MPX-Module (Slot 1)
• 2TB Apple SSD
• Nvidia Geforce RTX 4080 FE (Slot 3)
• 2TB Samsung QVO 870 (SATA)

Nachdem ich demnach schon erfolgreiche Aufrüstungen vorgenommen habe, wollte ich mir noch ein 6TB NVMe-RAID (3x2TB) spendieren, und hier fängt das Problem an:

Nach dem Einbau und anschließendem Einschalten blinkt die Statusleuchte 2x gelb (PCIe Fehler) und das wiederholt sich bis zum manuellen Ausschalten. Der Mac beginnt also nicht einmal den Bootvorgang. Ich habe daraufhin immer eine NVMe entfernt und festgestellt, dass der Mac mit einer einzelnen startet. Habe dann alle 3 zuvor verwendeten Slots mit jeder NVMe getestet und kann Defekte an den NVMès, den Slots und Adaptern ausschließen - mit einer funktioniert der Mac, egal welche NVMe und welcher Slot. Ich habe dann weitere Singleadapter, NVMe`s und auch Multiadapter ausprobiert und bin zum gleichen Ergebnis gekommen - sobald mehr als eine NVMe verbaut wird verweigert der Mac seinen Dienst.

Mehrere NVMe funktionieren jedoch sobald ich die RTX 4080 entferne. Dies ergibt für mich jedoch keinen Sinn, da die Karte in Slot 3 befindlich ist und dieser, wie auch Slot 1, ja direkt an die CPU angebunden ist. Also ein Mangel an verfügbaren Lanes besteht nicht, da die verbliebenen Slots pro Pool noch 16 Lanes verfügbar haben bzw. Pool B abzgl. des IO-Boards noch 12 Lanes. Die Singleadapter z.B. waren alle x4 was also kein Problem darstellen sollte. Und die einzeln verbaute wurde auch automatisch in Pool A mit einer 25% Auslastung zugewiesen. Nachdem ich zuletzt die Vermutung hatte, dass das Problem bei mehr als 4 zusätzlich beanspruchten Lanes entsteht, habe ich testweise eine Samsung PM1735 mit 8 Lanes verbaut. Mit dieser war ein starten in Kombination mit der RTX 4080 problemlos möglich. Nachfolgend eine grafische Untermalung diesbezüglich:

Die aufgezeigte Lösung hat bei mir jedoch nicht geholfen.

Folgende Komponenten wurden bereits getestet:

• NVMe Samsung 970 Evo Plus 2TB​ (3 Stk.)
• NVMe Crucial P3 Plus 2TB (2 Stk.)
• Samsung PM1735 3,2TB (x8, funktioniert mit Nvidia)
• Sabrent m.2 NVMe PCIe Adapter (3 Stk.) (x4)​
• Icy Box 60403 PCIe Adapter (3 Stk.) (x4)​
• Sabrent 4-Drive PCIe Adapter (x4)​
• Sonnet Fusion SSD m.2 PCIe Card (x16)​
• Sonnet Fusion U.2 Card mit IcyBox NVMe zu U.2 Gehäuse (x16)

Die Singleadapter wurden in den Slots 5,6 & 7 verwendet. Der Sabrent 4-Drive in Slot 6 und die Sonnet jeweils in Slot 5. Die Multiadapter setzen kein Bifurcation des MLB voraus. Bei der Dual U.2 Karte hat der Mac schon mit einer NVMe den PCIe-Fehler ausgegeben - ohne die RTX funktionierte auch diese Problemlos mit zwei NVMe`s.

Vielleicht hat hier ja jemand eine Lösung für das Problem.

Mein Mac hat während des Betriebs rote gelbe und letztens einen schwarz grünen Schirm gezeigt. Habe die alte Festplatte wieder eingebaut gleiches Ergebnis. Diagnose konnte ich starten-/- keine Probleme-Referenzcode: ADP000. Fortschritt Balken bleibt nach einem cm stehen.

Gestern gab es mitten im Betrieb (es lief gerade ein Apple Diagnose Speichertest) einen lauten Knall (so als ob man mit der flachen Hand aufeinanderklatscht) und die Sicherung für diesen Bereich im Haus ist herausgeflogen.

Nach dem Wiedereinschalten der Sicherung und Einstecken des Netzkabels in den Mac Pro (kleinste Version mit Quadcore) funktionierte wieder alles problemlos.

Ich habe an sämtlichen Geräten gerochen, den Mac Pro habe ich dazu geöffnet, aber ich habe keinen Geruch wahrnehmen können.

Kann sich irgendjemand zufälligerweise erklären, was das gewesen sein könnte?

Ich hab mir daraufhin ein Batterie mit vergleichbaren Werten gekauft.

Beim zerlegen habe ich aber gesehen das zwischen der alten Batterie und dem kleinen Board ein Chip dazwischen ist. Ist der wichtig? Muss der auch zwischen der neuen Batterie sein?

Weiters habe ich dann leider erst später in den Kommentaren gesehen das eine Batterie mit einem PCM board nicht geladen wird.

Please note that most batteries that you find/buy, will come with a PCM board (which is meant to protect the battery during charging/discharging). If your battery has this module, and you connect it to the RAID card, it will not charge…

Auf den Bildern bei der Xserve Batterie ist aber anscheinend ebenfalls eine Batterie mit solchen Board verlötet worden. Ich bin daher also etwas verwirrt, denn wenn man dieses Board laut Kommentar entfernt begibt man sich mit der Batterie auf gefährliches Terrain! Und ich will auf keinen Fall mit einem brennenden MAC dastehen!

Bei meinem MacPro 2.1 2x3GHz, 8core, 32GB RAM zeigt die Northbridge mit “Temperaturmonitor” neuerdings “Kühlkörper NorthBridge” 95°.

Läuft aber gut (aktuell nur 24GB drin)

Mein Problem: welcher Kühlkörper IST der auf der Northbridge: der unter dem RAM-Board-Cage oder der weiter unten??

A web search says I need to run Apples EFI Mac Pro firmware 1,5.

UPDATE 9/15/16

I got by the 5570 error code by opening the MacProEFIUpdate dmg but not running it.

Then running the MacPro 2009-2010 Firmware tool ( ran OK without getting the error).

Said to shut down and restart holding down the power button until it started flashing.

I did this a couple of times. It looked like it was going to work but I did not get a firmware progress bar, it just booted normally. And I still have Boot ROM Version: MP41.0081.B07. The problem is the same as stated here:

Mine is at the B07, so the EFI updater should work but still will not.

FURTHER UPDATE

Tried it three times and failed. Booted from a clean system on an external drive and success. Now have Boot ROM Version: MP51.007F.B03

I do not get the error message when trying to download the macOS Sierra Master Beta, it's just doesn't download.

UPDATE 9/20/16

Installed Sierra on external drive and booted from it on the MacPro. All appears to be running well, just one incompatible software and that was Symantec Endpoint Protection. Will play with it this way for a few days to see if there are any other issues but it's really starting to look like Apple just wanted to make the machine obsolete prematurely.

UPDATE 9/29/16

After testing for a few days using an external with Sierra and finding no problems, I went ahead and installed without issue on my MacPro. Using a Logitech QuickCam Vision Pro Webcam w/ Mic camera and microphone. The camera does not do well in low light and is not near the quality of an iSight. Siri runs fine with it and I can now send messages verbally to anyone in my address book.

I will be trying an install on a 64 bit early 2009 MacBook Pro this weekend.

• PFM006 - There may be an issue with the System Management Controller (SMC)

• PPM001 - There may be an issue with the power management system

The mac powers on fine, but is extremely slow. The SSD is cleared so no software is installed, running from Big Sur from an USB is also really slow.

I’ve opened up the machine and there was a lot of dust. Cleaned out a lot and have put it back together. No change. The water indicators I’ve seen on the boards are not red, hence there is no liquid damage from what I can see. Nor can I see anything weird on the open sides of the boards.

I’ve also done the SMC reset, didn’t help either.

I got the 6 core D500 model with 16gb ram. It also has some HDMI issues from time to time, having the screen flicker (like it’s not getting a propper connection); however using thunderbolt > HDMI works fine.

Does anybody know what I can do to resolve this issue? Do I need to replace the backpanel/PSU, or is there another issue which I can look at?

I hope to have some advice about my situation with my Mac Pro 1.1..

I'm little late I know but only in these days I have had the change to upgrade my Mac.

I'm an expert user and have repaired, tweaked, hacked a lot of devices so for me Apple hardware and software are thing that i'm deal with almost every day.

This time I have decide to take time to upgrade my old:

Mac Pro 1.1 (2006)

The upgrade plan was:

- Max Ram 32Gb

- Ssd Boot HD

- Airport Extreme Card

- Mac OS X 10.9.5 with TIAMO Boot (SFOTT)

- Ati Radeon 5770 HD 1Gb (Original Apple not flashed from Pc hardware)

- Netkas 2.1 Firmware Update (since I need to upgrade CPUs for have more computing power)

I have done all of these upgrades successfully without any problems till the CPUs swap..

I have choose to upgrade my Mac Pro with a matched pair of Xeon X5365 (I've already successfully done this kind of operation a lot of times).

After I complete the CPUs swap and bring back all the inside of the Mac Pro (cleaned everything), I also changed the Logic Board Battery,

when were time to turn on, the Mac was "working" but NO CHIME and black screen.

This was the exactly sequence of events:

1) Before proceed to turn on the Mac I have reset the SMC with his own button on the Logic Board for 5 seconds

2) closed the case and attached back the AC plug

3) the Mac immediately turn on WITHOUT pressing the POWER BUTTON (light on the power button is on and stable)

4) Dvd drive turn on, front and rear fan spin normally and the HD drives other than the SSD Boot, spin.

5) No Chime - No Boot - no chance to use keyboard for a NVR reset

Checked immediately the DIAG_LED button:

Led 1 - Trickle Pwr ON

Led 6 - GPU Present ON

Led 7 - Power On ON

Led 8 - EFI Done OFF WHILE SHOUD BE ON (as stated in the Apple Service Manual) Indicates: EFI is done loading

I have try to reset again the SMC and change again the Logic Board Battery but nothing, the Mac start up but NO CHIME.

Swapped out the GPU, no chime, same with the Ram dims, I have try to pull out every dims and leave only 2 in the upper riser althought the memory riser diagnostic leds are all OFF (so no faulty dimms). Also removed Airport Card.

For test purpose I also have try to swap back the old CPUs but the things remain the same; NO CHIME, NO BOOT.

What lead me here before buy a new logic board or power supply is the LED 8 from the DIAGNOSTIC LEDs.

On every post I have find googling around NO ONE ever report the behave of the Led 8 in they'r Mac Pro:

LED 8 - EFI DONE - In my case OFF while as stated in the Apple Service Manual, should be ON.

also notice that Led 6 - GPU Present in my case the light is ON also if the GPU card is pulled out, strange uh?

Could someone here please help me to understand better what's happen to my Mac Pro?

The only other clue I can provide about a strange behave of my Mac before the upgrade is that from about a year ago after I have installed the ATI RADEON 5770 HD Instead of his standard GPU, when I hit the POWER BUTTON, before to hear the CHIME I had to what 5-10 seconds and after the Netkas 2.1 Firmware Update the time to have the CHIME was the same.

This delay of the chime sound could be related with the LED 8 EFI DONE OFF?

I also have try to PUSH the Power Button for 10 seconds for check if I eventually could be able to restore the original EFI but doesn't work, the light of the power button remain ON and don't blink.

What's happen could be related to the 2.1 Firmware Update?

I notice the the Netkas 2.1 Firmware Update for Mac Pro 1.1 in my case update only the Firmware and not the SMC (still 1.7f10), is this normal?

as you are the experts in the field — my Mac Pro exhibits some audible coil whining. I've tried unplugging all kinds of devices and ran the device through another power outlet. I've disabled Bluetooth and WiFi to change power consumption. I've changed the fan speed with iStat menus and tried putting some strain on the GPU and CPU with benchmarks. Any ideas or would you say the noise is within spec? Apple would exchange the nMP for a new one but they are not sure if that would fix the issue...
