Power Mac G4 MDD: Apple G4 MDD Power Switch austauschen

Hallo zusammen,

Power Mac G5: Will not boot, grey screen

This is a G5 2.5Ghz Quad. OS X 10.5.6. 8GB RAM. I get the boot sound, then a grey screen. That is all. Then the fans start blowing real loud until I turn it off.

This is what I have tried:

replace with other RAM

unplug drives

Reset nvram like in this article. The problem is then that I have problems getting to OpenFirmware. Sometimes I am able to but when I get to the OF screen there is no reaction from typing. I can i.ex. type the first line but then there is no response from the keyboard. The keyboard is plugged directly into the USB port.

*

I got hold of the Apple Service Source Manual for Quad G5. (Let me know if someone needs that!) and just getting to the cooling and the power supply seems a bit tricky. So I read about this Apple power supply exchange (http://www.apple.com/support/powermac/po...) and am trying for that first. So it seems from the LED light that the CPUs are overheated and that could be related to the power supply going bad. I will post results of my shot at Apple.

UPDATE - THINK I MAY GIVE UP **

I took the machine to an Apple service center and they confirmed it was the processors gone bad. Of course this has to do with the cooling failed. Still I was not able to get a warranty repair even if I showed them the extended powersupply article and the article about the cooland leak. They said the machine was too old. They did offer me to fix the machine for about $1300. Since this is 2 machines with same error and since I have 16GB of RAM invested in each one just before this all happened, I might just have to accept the offer. Any comments?

Power Mac G5: Why won't my G5 boot?

I turn the machine on, the little light above the start switch does not go on, there is not single gong signifying boot up and nothing on screen. Can't boot from DVD either. Tried removing memory, resetting all cards an devices, and resetting PRAM with the silver button on the system board. Still no luck.

Any suggestions?

Update

Still not resolved. The machine is a 2.0GHz dual tower model, late 2005. I can remove the inner cover and the red light goes on. Tried resetting both PRAM and SMU but still no luck. Earlier in the week, I was able to reboot it but if I turned it off, it wouldn't go back on again. Tried new power cable and different outlet but same thing.

Sounds like the power supply. Where can I buy one for this model? Are there any disassembly guides on iFixit to help?

Power Mac G5: Power Mac G5 won't start

Late 2005 Power Mac G5 (Model A1047) does not power up. It fires up, the power button light on the monitor blinks (single blinks about every 4 seconds) but the monitor does not light up. The fan in the tower does start running after its on for sometime, but no display or anything else. Tried the cudo (?) button (for one second first and again for 30 seconds as suggested on a forum), and resetting the PRAM (command+option+P+R), force shutdown..... nothing works. I have 4x 1 GB RAM installed and they are paired.

This is a hand down computer that has been sitting idle for months (maybe even a year) now. Not sure if that is the issue. Any help is appreciated.

Power Macintosh G3 All-In-One: Hard drive recognition size and mounting problem

I building a hot rod Beige G3 for a customer. I've built one of these for him before but forgotten a lot about these machines because it's been ten years +. Using 10.2.8. Sonnet 1GHz G4 CPU. 768 Megs of RAM. Bus one, a 120 HD formatted 2 partition to a 7.5 GB with the systems on it and 112 GB as storage. The second hard drive, 500 Megs, was formatted on a MDD to be able to see past the 128 Meg limit. System profiler sees the drive as a 128 but won't mount it. The drive is set to master and the DVD set to slave. I seem to remember there were three different ROMs for this machine but don't remember why. Anyone have a better memory than me? I hope so.

It took a month or trial and error but I now have the answer.

Power Mac G5: Power Mac G5 won't read DVDs

A SuperDrive equipped PowerMac G5 running OS-X Tiger will read and burn CDs, but won't read DVDs. Upon checking the hard drive "partitioning" scheme, it shows that it's formatted with the older Apple Partition Map - not "GUID". Could this be the cause of its inability to see DVDs? If I also re-partition the Hard Drive as GUID and upgrade the OS to 10.5 Leopard, will this solve the problem? (I already reset the PRAM and reset the "Open Firmware").

Power Mac G4 MDD: SCSI PCI card bus controller

I got in a PowerMac 8100/80 today with some data the customer needs on it. I thought no problem, I'll just drop in a USB PCI card. Upon opening, it is NuBus. Pulled the hard drive and put in an external SCSI enclosure. Put a SCSI PCI card in to my MDD. The external drive is not seen. Checked my system profiler and see no SCSI driver. Any idea on where to get one that will work with 10.5.8. By the way, the 8100/80 still runs just fine, but does seem a bit slow and needs a battery. Not bad for a machine that's older than Nick!

UPDATE

Seagate ST19171N, 1 5/8", 10 pairs of jumpers, 4 pair block on first four pair, skip one and a jumper, four bare pair, standard SCSI external box with two 50 pin centronics. No terminator block on box. Cable is a 50 pin to 25 centronics. PCI SCSI II Apple brand card

Power Mac G4 MDD: G4 MDD freezes when CPU gets hot - why?

From a cold start the CPU (Dual 1.25GHz) temperature rises until it reaches over 50°C in about 40 minutes, when the G4 freezes. The HD remp also rises steadily to 35°C. I have to press the start button to shut it down.

I have cleaned all dust and fluff out of the machine, checked that all fans are working and replaced the heat sink grease and still it happens.

If I open the side door and use a small external fan to blow cool air over the heat sink the G4 operates normally for hours with the CPU temperature at a steady 35°C and the HD at a steady 26°C.

The technician (Apple Genius) at the local Apple Shop said they did not have the gear to check everything on such an old model

Mac, but all the sensors checked out OK and he thought the problem may be an ageing CPU. What do you think?

Power Mac G4 MDD: System Launcher in System 9

I've got a customer I just can't get to move to system ten. He wants his launcher on the desktop on start up. I've put an alias in the (System Folder - start up items) but that doesn't bring it up. I work on system 9 so seldom now that I've forgotten how to do it. Does anyone have a better memory than mine?

Thanks
