Distortion in sound when playing at any higher level

I've had this speaker for a few years now and i love it. I like to play my music quite loud and it sounded great it has recently been distorting the sound ( since my son borrowed it) I'm desperate to get this problem fixed but as yet have had no helpful answers to this problem. is it beyond repair? Is it something i would need specialist help with? or is it something i could manage myself?
