My 2005 King quad 700 low range issue

My king quad will spit and sputter like it’s hitting the rev limiter anytime I put it in low range unless I hold the override button down.  It is only supposed to do this in reverse or differential lock mode, not simply by being in low range. Can anyone help me figure this out?
