Upgraded my broken SSD, is there a way to install OS over Internet?

Out of nowhere my early 2013 Macbook pro 13” retina stopped working. I tried recovery options but nothing worked so took it to Apple’s genius bar. They tried everything and concluded that it, for whatever reason, my SSD was dead and needed to be replaced but that it would be more than £1000 if Apple did it so I was better off doing it myself. Note: by this point they had wiped my original hard drive.

I bought the SSD they recommended and replaced it without issue. They advised me to boot from recovery when I powered up, connect to my wifi network and then install the OS from utilities menu.  The problem I’m having is that when I go to install the OS (it’s only offering me Mountain Lion) and it asks me to select the drive I wish to install it on, there’s no drive.

When I go to disk utilities to try and format the drive, name it etc. I see disk0, Mac OS X Base System. When I click ‘image’ I can also see a remote disk. Most of the options to erase, partition, restore etc are shaded out unselectable.

I don’t have TimeMachine but that doesn’t seem to be selectable either. Everything I’ve read suggests I need to manually install the OS off a USB device but I don’t have a copy/quite understand what that entails.
