Your drive has either failed or is failing. Drag what ever you can get off it and onto another media.

You did not say if you were using it with a Mac or PC. The drive may just have developed some bad blocks making it unreadable. When you do format it MS Fat will work as an external with Mac or PC. But you need to erase it and use a “Secure Erase that writes zeros to every block on the drive. This will allow the directory the ability to map out all the bad blocks so they will not be written to again.
