You likely have a double whammy!

If you smell something burnt then you likely have bad electrolytic capacitors likely in the power supply as you noted [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capacitor_plague|capacitor plague] is a real issue for these older displays.

The second issue is the [https://www.plazmo.com/pages/ccfl|backlight CCFL tubes] and the [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CCFL_inverter|CCFL Inverter] for the backlight also tend to fail. Here the tubes loose their vacuum and the cathode erode. The Inverters have a flyback coil and a few electrolytic capacitors as well.

It will take some doing to get your displays back to working order, consider the costs (parts & labor) vs replace them with another display.

I know how you feel! I have two 27” Thunderbolt displays and now have three junkers to keep them running! Sadly, its getting close to the end for them ;-{
