Mein Problem

The MBP-2012 hard drive failed. I bought (2) 1 TB SSD/HDD hybrid drives to upgrade both laptops at the same time. Incidentally I also bought RAM upgrades since I'd already have the case open.

Meine Reparatur

The repair procedure was bumpy and required a second order for additional parts.

The RAM upgrades were the easiest task and the MBP-2012 now has 8GB RAM while the MBP-2010 now has 16GB RAM (max allowed under latest MacOS).

The new SSD/HDD hybrid drives did not work in the HDD bays of either MBP. There is an article somewhere on the web that stated 2009 and early 2010 MBP HDD cables were not designed for SATA 6.0 and would not work because the data was too fast. And it turned out that the "broken" HDD worked just fine but the MBP-2012 cable was broken. All four drives worked well and booted from the external USB port but all were very slow (USB 2.0). Sent off for a dual drive enclosure to replace optical drive in the MBP-2010 as well as a new drive cable for the MBP-2012. New cable did NOT fit the MBP-2010 and YOU SHOULD BE CAREFUL ABOUT WHICH HDD CABLE YOU BUY IF YOU ALSO HAVE A MBP-2009 OR 2010. Also, the external USB-to-SATA cable that came with the dual drive kit didn't work, no optical disks mount on the desktop and disks eject from external optical drive.

Final result: MBP-2010 has original HDD in original slot plus 1TB SSD/HDD hybrid drive in former optical drive bay.

MBP-2012 has original HDD in original slot on new drive cable, same optical drive in original bay, and 1TB SSD/HDD hybrid drive "surplus" on external USB for Time Machine backups.

Cost: roughly twice what it would have been if I had tested my devices before ordering parts. Let that be a lesson to save your money in future.

Cheers!

Mein Rat

Don't assume that a part is broken until you take it out and test it. If I had known the hard drive cables were so flimsy I would have first tested each drive in the other laptop and saved myself about half the repair cost.
