iPod Touch 4th Generation Front Panel Replacement

Difficult

Mein Problem

My daughter dropped her iPod Touch and cracked the front screen.

Meine Reparatur

The repair went well. Tedious and very very delicate, but successful.

Mein Rat

Please refer to the "Installing iPod Touch 4th Generation Front Panel Replacement" guide:

Step 1. I was a little hesitant with the heating of the adhesive. When I started prying, the screen cracked even more. I think that if I had gotten the adhesive hotter, the front panel would've come off easier. Later, I made sure that all the old adhesive was removed. At this point I did put more heat to it, and very carefully peeled the old adhesive strips up. This made it a lot easier to put down the new adhesive. Plus you don't want more than the thickness of one adhesive strip under the panel or it will not re-install flush.

Step 3 and 4 - As I lifted the front panel up from the bottom, the display data cable unplugged itself. This was OK, but watch that digitizer cable! That cannot be unplugged until much later.

Step 7 - WARNING - I broke a wire on this step. When prying under the bottom corner as shown in the guide, make sure you get between the steel mid plate and the "black box" (see my attached picture) The "black box" came up with the steel mid plate and the blue wire was broken at the corner of the PCB. Luckily I have access to some precise soldering equipment and I was able to splice a new wire in place.

Step 13 - Reattaching the display data cable is a pain because it is so short. My advice is to get a long tool (like a dental pick) that allows you to reach under the front panel while you hold it over the case. Use this tool to press down on the connector - Gently. Be patient.

Also, a very nice set of tweezers is highly, highly recommended.

The guide was great and if you follow it carefully, you should be successful. Good luck.
