Mein Problem
My trusty, old 2007 MacBook Pro's GPU finally started to show signs that it was on it's way to silicon heaven. Distorted shapes on the screen, intermittently stuck lines of pixels, and random lock-ups and shutdowns were plaguing my system. It was time to get my hands dirty!
Meine Reparatur
The repair process went very smoothly! The guide on replacing the logic board couldn't have been clearer. It took me about two hours (I was being extra careful and methodic) to make the swap. When I got the old board out, I couldn't believe how much thermal paste was on the processors and the chipset! Looks like Apple's rule of using an entire syringe of thermal paste for each processor (very stupidly, I might add) was holding true here. I cleaned off all of the old paste, put a dab of Arctic Silver on each, put the new board in and I'm back in business (and running an average of 10 degrees cooler on all accounts!). Should I mention that my anti-static mat was grounded to the ground pin of a live extension cord? No better ground than the real one, right? :-)
Mein Rat
Make sure you have an anti-static mat (or wristband) when you're working with such a sensitive piece of circuitry. I know that I didn't physically ground myself as much as I should've and I know that the mat saved my butt. Make sure that you use precisely the right size screwdrivers as well when working on such a small scale, or you could end up stripping a screw head entirely (I almost did, so be careful!).
