Mein Problem

My battery indicator would show the battery was fully charged but without declining even a quarter the iPod would not play for even the length of a CD. I love my iPod, because it is not a touch model and holds all the music I have purchased or borrowed. And while I'm sure the hard drive will go eventually, I really was not ready to spend $300 for a new one now.

Meine Reparatur

Sorry, I don't have any pictures! I toyed with the idea of having my wife video the process but I really wanted to do this alone! I was fully prepared that my iPod would never work again and I really didn't want anyone to be around.

The entire repair took me about 1/2 hour. This is the first time I tried to open any Apple product. I had trouble opening the case. The trouble included finding a starting place and once finding one, prying the case apart enough to keep it open. Unlike the repair guide on iFixit, I didn't try to unplug the hard drive. There was enough slack in the battery and hard drive cable to place the back of the iPod on top of the front piece with the hard drive intact.

I was nervous prying the battery out, concerned that it would pick up the headphone/hold switch cable but that turned out to be a non-issue.

The one issue I did have was on the battery cable connector. The intructions might have been clear but I didn't get it. I ended up prying the entire connector off the pins that hold it to circut board. In hindsight, this might have made the repair easier as I had much more room to insert the battery cable and click the tab down. I had no trouble placing the connector back on the pins.

Closing the iPod is a snap (pun intended). I was shocked and amazed that the entire process took a half hour and my ipod is working like new.

Mein Rat

Best advice is you can do it! I did!

Keep the tear down picture handy. There were some plastic spacers that fit aournd the charging port that fell out when I opened the case. It was clear from picture what they were and how they went back but without a picture I would have had no clue.

Be gentle with the battery connector. It is difficult to know if the connector tab has moved. There is not a lot of play in the tab. If the connector does come off, remember the brown tab faces the bottom.

Good luck!
