Late in the day, just as the sun was setting, I plopped down on the couch to play the continuation of my campaign in Resistance 3. I booted the PS3 up. Everything went smoothly. I started the game and was playing for only five minutes when the screen when dark and some incomprehensible error message popped up on the screen.
Immediately afterward, the machine shut itself down. When I tried to turn the system back on, it began to start up for a couple of seconds then suddenly flashed a yellow light a few times followed by a flashing red light. The machine then shut itself down again. This same process happened every time I tried booting it up.
I ordered the YLOD package from this site hoping that it would fix my problem because the alternative of paying SONY a couple hundred dollars was not acceptable.
Fortunately for me, the system that is detailed in the video and in the webguide is the same make as the model I have (i.e. the 60Gb launch version). I watched the video first to get a visual of how the process went. Then I used the webguide as I manually did the repair.
Every part of the repair went along very easily for me until the end. When I reached the step where you have to pry the heatsink off of the chips, the copper tubes bent just a little because it stuck so firmly to the chip. The tubes only bent just a little bit so I figured they would be fine. I used the heat gun etc. and reassembled the machine.
When I tried turning the system back on after everything, it worked almost as if nothing had happened. I had to reset the date and time but otherwise all of my saved data was intact. It has been over a week now since the repair job and I haven't had any problems so far (knock on wood).
Regarding the copper tubes bending, I think that a little bending is acceptable when prying the heatsink off. The real concern here is that you avoid yanking too hard such that you bend the tubes to the point were they are crimped or almost crimped. Copper is a pretty soft metal, so just keep that in mind when prying it off because it can bend real easily.
In addition, it may seem anticlimactic that using this glorified blow dryer device is going to fix your problem, but it really does work even though you won't notice a visible change. That is all.
