I noticed the Remote Control power button removal wasn't shown in the teardown but it was out in the picture of the separating from its' innards. Why do I mention this? Because mine also came out and now I can't get it to stay in. What happened to it? Idk.

Is this the same bottom cover as the AirPort 802.11ac?

    • Apple APL1091 338S00673 Leistungsmanagement IC

    • Broadcom BCM57762A0KMLG Gigabit Ethernet-Controller

    • Alpha & Omega Semiconductor AONE36196 MOSFET

    • T245 MrHP Quarzoszillator

    • Lattice Semiconductor iCE5LP4K iCE Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA)

    • Macronix MX25U8035F 8 Mb Serieller NOR Flash-Speicher

So are we assuming it has 4GB RAM like the 2018 XS/XS Max devices, or will you guys dig into it? You guys are usually are more detailed than this, come on!

    • ... und darunter diese Chips:

    • Kinetic Technologies (ehemals Megachips) MCDP2920A4 DisplayPort 1.4 zu HDMI 2.0 Konverter

    • SK Hynix H230E8126AD0 M1TPPC64HA2 (wahrscheinlich 32 GB Speicher)

    • Murata (likely) 339S00763 Wi-Fi/Bluetooth Modul

    • LATTICE 9437CNUC A0166N05 verstärkter ARC Receiver

    • ON Semiconductor LC89091JA digitaler Audio Interface Receiver

    • Infrarot-Receiver

    • Nordic Semiconductor nRF52833 Bluetooth 5.2 SoC mit NFC und Zigbee

The new Apple TV sports HDMI 2.1 and HDCP 2.3, but the Megachips part only converts to HDMI 2.0/HDCP 2.2. Do you have any clue as to what is used for the HDMI transmitter function, or is that coming from the A12 or the Lattice FPGA? None the listed parts seem to line up with that functional block. THANKS

    Michael Heiss - Antwort

Version 2.1 of the HDMI specification supersedes and replaces version 2.0b. All of the new features in the 2.1 release are optional. This is the same scenario as USB 3.0 > 3.1 > 3.2. To quote the HDMI Licensing Administrator:

“Since each version of the HDMI specification provides a set of potential capabilities and not a set of required functionality… [y]ou shall reference HDMI Specification version numbers only when clearly associating the version number with a feature or function as defined in that version of the HDMI Specification. You shall not use version numbers by themselves to define your product or component capabilities or the functionality of the HDMI interface… If you use an HDMI Specification version number to describe your HDMI implementation, you shall clearly and explicitly identify some or all features or functions of that version of the HDMI Specification that are supported by your implementation.”

    repoman27 -

Apple says this about the HDMI capabilities of the new Apple TV 4K:

    “HDMI 2.1*

*Support for up to 4K 60-fps HDR video output and Audio Return Channel (ARC or eARC) only. Requires HDCP when playing protected content and compatible TV or Receiver”

So in this case, the SiI9437 eARC receiver is providing the sole HDMI 2.1 feature supported by this device. HDCP is an entirely separate specification, and AFAIK, Apple has never said that the new Apple TV 4K supports anything beyond HDCP 2.2.

Incidentally, this device and the previous Apple TV 4K both use the Megachips MCDP2920 (not the MCDP2900). I’m not aware of any publicly available datasheets for the MCDP2920, but it is almost certainly a similar DisplayPort 1.4 to HDMI 2.0b protocol converter with HDCP 2.2 repeater. The DisplayPort output of the A12 is routed to the MCDP2920 and the Sil9437 sits on HDMI pins 14 and 19 to perform ARC/eARC duties.

    repoman27 -

The LC89091JA digital audio interface receiver is almost certainly part of the ARC/eARC chain as well. And if I had to guess, the iCE5LP4K FPGA is on IR receive/CEC duties.

The only stated differences in video playback capabilities between the 1st and 2nd generation Apple TV 4K models are explicit support for HLG and 60 fps HDR playback at up to 3840 x 2160 resolution, which are likely enabled by the improved video codecs present in the newer A12 SoC. However, the continued use of the MCDP2920 means 4:2:2 chroma subsampling is still required for 4K HDR output at 60 fps.

This is why I love iFixit. Everyone knows something. Thanks to repoman27 for sharing.

    • Chip-Identifikation, Fortsetzung:

    • Skyworks SKY66404-11 2.4 GHz Zigbee/Thread/Bluetooth Front-End Modul (FEM) (vermutlich)

    • Dialog Semiconductor SLG46621 Mixed-Signal-Array

    • Texas Instruments CD3255 Leistungssteuerung (vermutlich)

    • Texas Instruments INA213 Strommessverstärker

    • ON Semiconductor LMV331SQ3T2G Einzel-Komparator

    • Diodes Incorporated (früher Lite-On) ABS20MH Brückengleichrichter

    • Infineon IPD65R1K4C6 N-channel MOSFET

    • NXP Semiconductor TEA1833LTS Schaltnetzteilcontroller

What is the output of the power supply? I would like to convert the AppleTV to run directly on DC power (live off grid and prefer to skip the inverter). I did the conversion for the 4G AppleTV, but haven’t found any solid info on the 5G version…

What's the part number of the round plastic thing? Remote fell down on the floor and broke the flex cable connector in 2 pieces.

    • Nordic Semiconductor nRF52840 Bluetooth 5/Zigbee/NFC SoC

    • Und unten das hier:

    • Analog Devices 343S00092 kapazitiver Touch-Controller

    • Maxim Integrated MAX77277 Power Management

    • NXP Semiconductor CBTL1610A3 Port-Controller

    • (e1) AA5 105 (vielleicht ein Dialog Semiconductor Audio Codec)

    • Infrarotdiode

  16. Fazit

So RAM is still 3GB?

Yes, still 3 GB RAM.

It’s a nice little detail that the SoC is cooled from both the front and the back. Does the PMIC also get cooled by a heatsink?

Thanks, nice work and very useful

ZigBee chips in both the TV *and* remote? Does this mean that they could directly control HomeKit devices with ZigBee?

That Guy - Antwort

This is for Thread (network protocol), which uses the same 802.15.4 standard. So yes and no. It will likely be for control of smarthome devices, but not plain zigbee devices.

Why are they using an A12B for the SOC? Why use such an old model when more recent productions include better onboard video decoders?

Charlie Geraci - Antwort

I think the main reason is the cost. The fewer transistors, the "easier" and the cheaper they can manufacture it. In addition, A12B is capable of all tasks that a streaming device requires nowadays. But I agree with you, I would also love having the latest SoC in my ATW 4K, cause why not. I don't want any CPU dips during decoding, but we probably won't have any with A12B for a long time.
